After my family abandoned me—I sold my emotions for 800,000 Chapter 10
I knew everything had gone completely off
the rails.
There was no way I could clear up the mess
right now anyway.
simply tilted my head back and stared at
the sky.
Graham looked at me with red–rimmed eyes,
“Hazel, why? I never could believe you were
this sort of person. Yet you actually did it all for 800,000 dollars…”
Before he could finish, I slapped him hard
across the face.
That slap stunned not just my entire family,
but Lucien too.
“If 800,000 dollars is so insignificant to you, why didn’t you give it to me?” I asked coldly.
Yvonne rushed over.
She held up the freshly slapped Graham, her face crumpled with obvious distress,
“Graham, are you okay? I have ointment in my bag, let me put it on for you…”
Graham pushed her away.
Yvonne froze for a second.
Dad stepped forward and spoke in a low voice, “Graham, don’t blame Hazel. She needs the money because she’s really sick and has to have surgery.”
It turned out Dad had finally asked about my condition on the way over.
It was something he could have confirmed
with a single phone call, but he’d refused to
do it before.
Mom’s eyes were red with tears, “My baby
girl had the surgery all alone…”
She trailed off mid–sentence. Everyone there
knew exactly why I’d had to go through the
surgery by myself.
Seeing Mom and Dad looking at me with guilt in their eyes, Yvonne panicked.
She stepped in front of me, lifting her chin defiantly, “Sis, no matter what, you
shouldn’t have hit Graham.
Do you have any idea how worried he was while you were missing? How worried all of us, your family, were…”
I slapped her across the face too.
I asked with a sweet smile, “Are you still
worried now?”
One slap each, that was fair of me.
Yvonne pressed a hand to her stinging cheek.
A flash of venom crossed her eyes, gone so
fast it was almost imperceptible.
She suddenly started slapping herself hard
across the face, “I know you blame me,
sister. Will this make you feel better? It’s all
my fault.
If I’d known earlier, I would have sold my
blood, even my kidney, to get the money for
you…”
She kept slapping herself, leaving bright red
streaks across her fair, delicate face. My
family, who had been on the verge of
coaxing me further, immediately took Yvonne’s side again.
Mom gasped and rushed to hold Yvonne
back, “Yvonne, what are you doing? None of
this is your fault…”
Dad snapped at me, “Hazel, that’s enough!
Don’t go too far!”
My brother, who doted on Yvonne more than anyone, charged straight at me, “Hazel, are you insane? So what if you’re sick? Does that
give you the right to act like this?
Besides, you’re standing here in one piece,
aren’t you? It’s not like you actually died,
right?
Come on, Yvonne, let’s go home! Ignore her.
If she’s got the guts, she can disown the family for real!”
My brother shielded Yvonne and led her
away.
Mom and Dad followed right behind them.
None of them noticed that Yvonne glanced
back over her shoulder and smiled at me. She
thought she’d won again.
Probably because this win had been extra
hard–fought, Yvonne forgot that Graham
was still there. He was standing in the
corner, and he had seen that smile of hers.
Graham walked over to me.
He still acted as if Lucien wasn’t even there,
only looking at me, “Hazel, I know what you want most. I’ll help you. When I pull this off, you can forgive me then.”
Graham left with heavy, dragging steps. I
didn’t want to look at him any longer, and
turned to leave, only to find Lucien standing
beside me, staring at me unblinkingly.
“What are you looking at?” I raised an
eyebrow.
“You have it really bad, don’t you?” Lucien
said.
I immediately put on a sickly sweet, high–pitched voice, “What? You see how tough and tragic I am, a poor, unyielding woman, and you’re falling for me?”
Lucien was thoroughly disgusted by my act,
and stormed off in a huff. Before leaving, he made a point of calling his secretary over, pointed at me and ordered, “Assign this woman to the marketing department. Put her to work riling up our competitors.”
Perfect. I just landed myself a new job.
