My Bestie Used My Photo to Catfish a Man—She Never Knew He Was My Boss Chapter 05

He just… said it. Out loud. I felt like my whole body was ott fire.

Iris, what the hell have you been doing for the past twenty-something years?

My phone rang. I grabbed it like a lifeline, not even checking the caller ID.

“Hey, Iris, off work yet?” Lauren’s sugary voice came through: “I started dating this guy yesterday-his

dad’s some big CEO. Connections everywhere! He’s taking me to a dinner tonight. Some heir to a massive company’s gonna be there.”

I played along. “Wow, that’s amazing.”

She ate up my praise like always. “He told me to bring friends, and thought of you right away. Bring that boyfriend of yours too. Maybe he’ll impress someone important.”

There it was again. Using me as her ugly backdrop. And completely ignoring everything that happened

yesterday.

“He…” I barely got one word out before she cut me off.

“Oh, Iris, I don’t mind. Friends share. I introduced you two anyway.”

Instinctively, I shot Adrian a pleading look. He glanced at his watch. “Unfortunately, I have a business

dinner tonight as well. I can’t make it.”

That was expected. Lauren sighed dramatically. “What a shame. Such a wasted opportunity. Iris, come by

yourself.”

My refusal caught in my throat again. I couldn’t force it out. “Just come. I’ll be bored out of my mind by myself. I already told them you’re coming-be there in thirty.” She hung up before I could answer.

I pretended not to hear Adrian’s earlier question. I blurted out,…I’m off now. We’ll talk later.”

I took a cab to The Rainbow Room and arrived ten minutes late. Outside the private dining room, Lauren’s sweet voice drifted out. “Ms. Vance, you’re gorgeous. I bet your friend’s pretty too.”

“Of course. You’ll see in a moment.” She giggled and got up to open the door.

Several eager eyes immediately locked onto me. One second later, everyone looked away, visibly disappointed. The corner of Lauren’s mouth curled up.

“Iris, you’re late. Penalty drink first. And this is Leo Crawford.”

The guy had playboy written all over him. He barely nodded, already back on his phone. The atmosphere turned awkward. I quickly sat down next to Lauren.

A moment later, Leo shot up, rushing toward the door. “He’s here!”

A young heir. Whatever his title was, everyone was curious. I looked up with the rest of them. What I saw was an untucked designer shirt, clinging to a perfect build.

And above that-I locked eyes with Adrian.

Beside me, Lauren’s eyes went wide. She blurted out, “What are you doing here?!”
