After walking for about an hour, headlights appeared behind me.
“Hey, what are you doing out here alone?”
“Car broke down. Can you give me a lift? Just to the nearest town with a train station.”
“Hop in.”
Once in town, I bought the earliest ticket available.
After boarding, I borrowed a power bank and turned on my phone.
Dozens of messages flooded in.
None were from Nathaniel.
I called my lawyer directly.
“Attorney Harrison, can you prepare divorce papers for me?”
“And I want Nathaniel to leave with nothing.”
There was a pause on the other end: “Nothing? That might be difficult unless there’s major misconduct—”
“He cheated. I have evidence. Also, that major client for his company? I was the one who made the connection. The contract expires next month, and I’ve already spoken to them—they aren’t renewing.”
“…Understood. I’ll draft the agreement immediately.”
After hanging up, I dialed my assistant’s number.
“Chloe Stevens, book me a flight out of the country for this afternoon. Anywhere, as long as I can go.”
“Ms. Miller, are you okay?”
“I’m fine,” I said.
It was two days later before Nathaniel’s assistant contacted me.
“Assistant Brooks, help me get in touch with Abigail. Her phone is off. Tell her I’m at the hospital, Daisy is still in critical condition, and I can’t leave. Tell her to wait at the service area, and I’ll send someone for her later.”
Assistant Brooks hesitated: “Mr. Cross, Ms. Miller… she’s already back.”
“What?”
“Mr. Cross, on Ms. Miller’s side… her lawyer sent over divorce papers. Also, Apex Solutions… they sent a contract termination notice.”
Nathaniel’s mind went completely blank.
He froze, feeling as if all strength had been drained from him, and didn’t move for a long time.
“Mr. Cross? Mr. Cross, are you there?”
