He Locked Me in His GOLDEN CAGE, So I Locked Him Behind Iron Bars Chapter 08
I rested my head on the side of Luke’s hospital bed, drifting in and out of consciousness. “If your feel bad, wake me up. I’ll go get the doctor…”Â
No answer.Â
I forced my eyes open.Â
With a bandage wrapped around his head and wearing his hospital gown, Luke still looked breathtakingly handsome.Â
By the moonlight, I watched him carefully pull a blanket over my shoulders.Â
I blinked fully awake as our eyes locked.Â
“Let’s get out of here,” I whispered. “GoÂ
somewhere where no one can find you, okay?”Â
“What about you?” he asked softly.Â
I laughed, trying to keep my voice light. “I’m fine. IÂ
don’t matter. You need to look out for yourself.”Â
No response.Â
Luke just watched me, his expression unsmiling..Â
He said with absolute sincerity, “You matter. YouÂ
matter the most.”Â
I looked away.Â
Luke reached out, wiping a tear from the corner ofÂ
my eye.Â
“Get some sleep. Goodnight,” I mumbled.Â
“I can’t sleep,” his long fingers rested against myÂ
cheek. “I just want to look at you.”Â
I paused, then turned back to him.Â
His eyes crinkled. “Our Hailee is always such aÂ
crybaby.”Â
The white moonlight washed over us.Â
I watched him in the silence.Â
Luke.Â
In my last life, I never went abroad, and I neverÂ
found happiness.Â
I spent every second hating my own weaknessÂ
and insignificance.Â
Even the bright future you sacrificed yourself toÂ
give me felt like a mirage.Â
I got a second chance at life.Â
But I still let you get hurt.Â
Was my choice right?Â
What do I have to do to make us happy?Â
What do I have to do… to make you happy?Â
The next day.Â
I got a call from an unknown number. “Lee?”Â
My face dropped.Â
I was sure I’d blocked his number ages ago!Â
Before I could hang up, the voice on the other end barked, “I hear you’ve bagged yourself a rich guy! So why haven’t you sent your uncle some cash?”Â
I asked, perfectly calm, “How did you get thisÂ
number?”Â
“I don’t just have your number, I know where you’reÂ
staying. Oh, and you’re still hanging around thatÂ
Luke kid, right?” The man chuckled with aÂ
malicious, oily sound.Â
I frowned, my grip tightening on the phone.Â
In my past life.Â
He didn’t find me and start demanding money untilÂ
years after this point.Â
Back then, I was already trapped in the Laurence.Â
estate.Â
The first time he showed up, Julian dealt with himÂ
instantly.Â
Julian had kissed me, his tone lazy: “Fixed aÂ
problem for you. Do I get a reward?”Â
So, the memory of that man hadn’t left much of aÂ
mark on me.Â
“I’m not asking for much. Two million dollars. HowÂ
about it?”Â
“Not a chance.” I hung up, expressionless, andÂ
blocked the number.Â
The sense of dread only grew stronger.Â
That afternoon, I was cornered.Â
The man with the rotting, yellow teeth puffed on aÂ
cigarette, sneering, “You actually dared to hang upÂ
on me? You really think I’m bluffing?”Â
The hospital was bustling with people.Â
I walked into a secluded stairwell, and heÂ
followed.Â
I looked him in the eye. “My mother has passed away. I have no familial financial obligation toÂ
you.”Â
“We’re family, kid. You really gonna let your uncle starve?” He spat on the floor, leering at me.Â
I walked past him toward Luke’s room.Â
He shoved me hard. “You ignoring me now?”Â
I stumbled backward two steps.Â
He raised his hand, ready to strike.Â
In the next second, a tall figure stepped in front ofÂ
me, catching his raised arm and twisting it with aÂ
sickening crack.Â
The man let out a howl of pain.Â
I locked eyes with those deep, black irises. AÂ
thought dawned on me, and I gritted my teeth:Â
“You brought him here? Why?”Â
Julian lowered his gaze.Â
The man started shrieking profanities: “Who theÂ
hell are you? A punk kid trying to be a hero?”Â
Julian looked bored. “Get lost.”Â
The man gave a wretched, defiant laugh. “I’ve gotÂ
nothing to lose. You won’t give me money? ThenÂ
I’ll make your little girlfriend pay up. Don’t blameÂ
me for what happens next!”Â
Julian raised an eyebrow, his tone flat. “WhatÂ
exactly are you going to do?”Â
“Oh, I’ve got plenty of ideas!” The man grinned,Â
showing his yellow teeth. “Our Hailee is a looker. IÂ
can just sell her to…”Â
Before he could finish.Â
Julian threw a punch.Â
With a dull, heavy thud, the man’s head snapped toÂ
the side, blood instantly bubbling from the cornerÂ
of his mouth.Â
Julian pressed his knuckles against the man’s jawÂ
and slammed him into the concrete floor. The sound of bone against stone was piercing.Â
Luckily, no one was in the stairwell.Â
I stepped back, ignoring the man’s desperate,Â
pleading eyes.Â
I didn’t make a sound to stop him.Â
Julian didn’t give the man a second to breathe. He lifted his foot and stomped down on his wrist. With a sharp crunch, the man shrieked in agony. Julian kept his foot there, grinding down, faceÂ
devoid of emotion.Â
The man on the ground twisted in pain. “Kill me, you bastard! If you don’t, I’m going to kill HaileeÂ
Townsend!”Â
Julian let out a cold, chilling laugh.Â
Then he clenched his fist and slammed it down-Â
no holding back, blow after blow.Â
I didn’t know how much time had passed.Â
“Wait,” I said hesitantly. “If you keep… he’s going toÂ
die.”Â
“Good riddance.” Julian scoffed, his face radiatingÂ
pure, unadulterated rage.Â
The commotion finally drew the hospital staff.Â
Someone panicked and called the police.Â
Julian was hauled off to the precinct, and becauseÂ
I was there, I was dragged in for questioning too.Â
Right before they separated us, he gave me a lazy,Â
lopsided grin.Â
“Hailee. Fixed a problem for you. Do I get aÂ
reward?”Â
Before I could say anything, he answered for me,Â
“The movie we watched at my place a few daysÂ
ago? We didn’t finish it. When I get out, comeÂ
finish it with me.”Â
I stared at him for a few seconds, then looked away, staying silent.
