The Mark That Wasn’t Mine Chapter 03
Grandma was moved to a private room. Lying there in the snow-white sheets, she looked so small and frail. The oxygen mask covered most of her face.
I held her cold hand. “I’m here, darling. You need to get well soon and come back to me.”
By a little past eight o’clock in the evening, the numbers on the monitor seemed to have stabilized somewhat. My nerves relaxed a little, and remembered that Grandma hadn’t had anything to eat or drink all day, I got up and went downstairs to buy some liquid food.
When I returned to the ward with my thermos, I saw a familiar figure curled up beside Grandma’s bed.
It’s Emily.
She leaned in close, her lips almost touching her grandmother’s ear, and was whispering something.
Almost instantly, Grandma’s body began to convulse violently! The heart monitor emitted a piercing shriek, and the curve on the screen plummeted, becoming almost a straight line.
“What have you done?!” I rushed over and shoved Emily hard.
She screamed and stumbled backward, slamming into the wall, then clutched her stomach in pain. “I… I just wanted to tell her the good news! I’m pregnant, Sarah. I thought Eleanor would be happy for Alex… I don’t know why she reacted like that…”
On the bed, a single tear rolled down Grandma’s tightly closed eyelids, and a wet gurgling sound came from her throat.
“Nurse! Healer! Help!” I kept hitting the call button over and over again.
“Don’t bother,” Emily said, slowly straightening up and smoothing out the hem of her skirt. “She’s lived a long life, hasn’t she?”
“Take that back!” Everything before my eyes turned blood-red. I lunged forward and clamped my hands tightly around her neck, straining with all my might. “I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you!”
She choked and clawed frantically at my arm. “Help! Alex! Help!”
“Sarah! Stop!” Alex’s roar echoed through the room. He yanked me aside and wrapped his arms tightly around Emily, who was gasping for breath. “Emily! Are you okay? The pup… is the pup all right?”
She clutched her belly, her brow furrowed. “Alex… It hurts so much… Our pup…”
His face went pale as he stopped the doctor who was rushing over. He shouted, “Healer! Save my mate!”
“No,” I hurriedly interrupted, “Save my grandma first! She’s dying!”
“Get lost!” Alex shoved me aside.
“No, Alex, please—my grandma is dying!” I crawled over and grabbed his leg.
“You jerk! Why are you always picking on Emily?” Alex kicked me aside.
All the healers and nurses were forced to follow him out.
The next moment, I heard a sharp beep from the machine behind me.
A falt green line appears on the screen.
It felt as if my chest were splitting open.
“No!!!!”
