The Ring That Sank, The Love That Drowned Chapter 08
Reid sat in the front row and started clapping.Â
At first, only a few people joined him. Then theÂ
applause spread through the entire room.Â
I stood beneath the lights, looking at the icy lake.Â
on the screen behind me.Â
In my previous life, that water had nearlyÂ
swallowed me.Â
This time, it was finally closing in around themÂ
instead.Â
The night Spencer took Vivian to the hospital, heÂ
turned around and bought me an entire season’sÂ
worth of Paris couture.Â
A screenshot of the bill landed on my phone.Â
The note was only a few words.Â
[For Natalie. Making it up to her.]Â
My assistant told me Vivian had originally pickedÂ
out that entire collection. She had planned to wearÂ
it for her comeback and return to the internationalÂ
charity–gala circuit.Â
For the first time, Spencer hadn’t given her whatÂ
she wanted.Â
He had bought all of it for me instead.Â
I looked at the note and laughed.Â
In my previous life, I waited ten years and endedÂ
up with nothing but discarded lace.Â
Now that I wanted nothing from him, he had finallyÂ
learned how to make amends.Â
My assistant asked, “Ms. Sinclair, should weÂ
return everything?”Â
“No.”Â
She froze for a moment.Â
I set down my phone.Â
“Resell it. Donate the proceeds to a children’sÂ
drowning–prevention charity, and list SpencerÂ
Vaughn as the donor.”Â
Half an hour later, the story was everywhereÂ
online.Â
Spencer called me himself.Â
“Do you really have to humiliate me like this?”Â
I asked, “Weren’t they mine to do whatever IÂ
wanted with?”Â
He had no answer.Â
From somewhere down the hospital corridor, IÂ
could hear Vivian crying.Â
“Spencer, forget about me. Go find Natalie. I’mÂ
only making things harder for you.”Â
Spencer lowered his voice.Â
“The doctor said the cut isn’t deep. Stop playingÂ
games with your life.”Â
The other end went quiet.Â
Vivian probably hadn’t expected him to refuse toÂ
indulge her for once.Â
But it was only once.Â
A nurse soon hurried over to say Vivian wasÂ
refusing the examination.Â
Spencer let out a heavy breath.Â
I didn’t need to see him to know he was about toÂ
go back to her.Â
Sure enough, he said, “Natalie, I’ll call you later.”Â
I laughed softly.Â
“Spencer, look at you. You’re still exactly theÂ
same.”Â
He said nothing.Â
“You say you want to make things up to me, butÂ
you can’t even finish one phone call with me.”Â
“That’s not-”Â
“Don’t explain.”Â
I hung up.Â
Then I called my lawyer.Â
“Sue Vivian for defamation and businessÂ
disparagement, and bring a separate claim basedÂ
on her deliberately endangering me at the lake.Â
Move on all three at once.”Â
My lawyer paused.Â
“Vaughn Group may try to pressure us.”Â
I looked toward the glow of the hospital in theÂ
distance.Â
“Then go after Vaughn Group too.”Â
The next day, my lawyer moved to preserve the evidence.Â
A nurse came forward with a signed statement.Â
The cut on Vivian’s wrist had been shallow andÂ
self–inflicted before she was admitted.Â
A recording also captured something Vivian hadÂ
said before she was admitted.Â
“Will this scar? Don’t make it too deep.”Â
Public opinion completely reversed.Â
Vivian’s team panicked and sent representativesÂ
to Sinclair Group that same night to negotiate aÂ
settlement.Â
They pushed an agreement across the table.Â
“Ms. Sinclair, Ms. Hale is willing to make a publicÂ
apology, but you must drop the lawsuits andÂ
acknowledge that the lake video was edited in aÂ
misleading way.”Â
I flipped to the final page.Â
The settlement offer was $150,000.Â
I looked up.Â
“Her entire career is only worth $150,000?”Â
The representative’s expression tightened.Â
“Don’t burn every bridge.”Â
I smiled.Â
“I didn’t.”Â
I fed the agreement into the shredder.Â
“I kept leaving bridges standing until all I had leftÂ
was a scrap of lace cut from someone else’sÂ
dress.”Â
After they left, Reid came in.Â
He set a signed statement from the hospital nurseÂ
in front of me.Â
“Here are the bank records showing Vivian paid off the nurse. And one more thing. The gallery overseas she signed with burned Calloway Group on a deal back then too. I’ve been looking into herÂ
for a long time.”Â
I looked at him.Â
“Mr. Calloway, are you this invested because you’re helping me, or because you want anotherÂ
bite out of Vaughn Group?”Â
He smiled.Â
“Both.”Â
I said nothing.Â
The smile faded from his face, and his voice grewÂ
more serious.Â
“But I won’t use you as bait.”Â
It wasn’t a grand declaration.Â
But it felt cleaner than every piece ofÂ
compensation Spencer had tried to throw at me.
