Grave of the Mafia’s Love Chapter 04

Grave of the Mafia’s Love Chapter 04

The cemetery was quiet and damp, filled with graves that no one ever visited.

Helen knelt before my gravestone, using a trowel to clear away the moss and dead leaves.

“Sylvia, I never imagined it would turn out this way. I thought I was just setting things right.”

“I never thought I’d ruin you.”

To compensate me, her pension fund had covered my chemotherapy and funeral expenses.

Now, she looked ten years older than her peers.

“I’m so sorry,” she said, tears streaming down her weathered cheeks. “I’m so sorry.”

A pair of shiny red-soled shoes appeared before her.

“…Ms. Cartwright?”

Julian Vance stood in the drizzling rain, holding a bouquet of dew-covered lilies.

His eyes widened, and his face was a picture of disbelief.

On the gray marble headstone, simple words were engraved:

Sylvia Reed

The kindest girl at rest.

1998–2022

“What the hell is this?” he roared. “Where is she?”

Helen slowly stood up and faced him. “She’s right here.”

Yes. I was right here.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Julian said with a sarcastic smile. “This is just another one of her pranks, isn’t it? She wants to see me weeping with grief over her?”

Helen said nothing. She pulled a pink piece of paper out of her pocket and, her hands trembling, smoothed out the creases.

“This is that letter from back then—the real one,” she said. “I’ve been looking for an opportunity to give it back to you.”

Julian instinctively reached out to catch it, but the next second, he let go.

He let it spin around once before it fell into a muddy puddle.

He rubbed his hands vigorously.

“I don’t need this junk. It’s just a waste of my time.”

“You stubborn bastard!” Helen gritted her teeth and threw a bank card at him.

“Sylvia used the money you gave her to buy an urn. Here’s what’s left.”

“Her only wish was for you to know the truth. She didn’t want to leave this world with any misunderstandings.”

Helen struggled to hold back her sobs, covering her face with her aged hands.

“I was the one who tampered with Sylvia’s letter—it was me all along. I did it to drive a wedge between the two of you.”

“I never expected your father to have a sudden heart attack, I didn’t expect Sylvia to be attacked. I never expected her to get leukemia…”

“It was a love letter—nothing more than a love letter from start to finish.”

Julian froze, and his finger twitched involuntarily.

“That’s impossible,” he took a half-step back, then sneered. “It’s all for her, isn’t it? You’re her accomplice.”

“She saw that I had money, so she wanted to come back to me. She made up all those lies, thinking I would forgive her.”

“Tell her to give up. In my eyes, she’ll always be a murderer.”

“No,” Helen said, trembling all over. “It’s all true.”

“If you still don’t believe me, take a look at this.”
