He Forgot My Birthday for Her Anniversary Again Chapter 10
Evan’s a good guy.Â
Back when I was struggling in school, he’d make study guides for me. Highlight the important parts. He helped me so much.Â
Now he needed help. Of course I’d help him.Â
“Deal! Anything you need, just ask.”Â
Turns out Evan came home for the sameÂ
reason–to clear his head. Seven days, same asÂ
- me.Â
When he found out we were flying back theÂ
same day, he said, “Don’t buy a ticket. I’ll drive. YouÂ
can ride with me.”Â
I nodded and canceled my flight.Â
What I didn’t expect was Brady showing up the day before we left.Â
He was carrying a bunch of fancy gift boxes.Â
I opened the door and stared. “What are you doing here?”Â
“Work slowed down. I had some time off, so I thought I’d come see your parents…” He paused. “IÂ
did promise them a visit, remember?”Â
My parents wanted to see him back then toÂ
feel out whether he was serious about marriage.Â
But we’re broken up now. No need.Â
“Brady. We’re done.Â
This is a waste ofÂ
time.”Â
I blocked the doorway. Didn’t let him in.Â
“Paige, I never agreed to break up. And I already apologized. Why are you still angry?”Â
His eyes were clear, confused. No guilt. NoÂ
regret.Â
I didn’t have the energy to rehash old wounds or explain pain he’d never understand.Â
“Brady, just because you say sorry doesn’tÂ
mean I owe you forgiveness.”Â
“Why? You never used to be like this-”Â
“Because I don’t love you anymore.” I lookedÂ
straight at him. “Every time you picked Skyler overÂ
me, I fell a little more out of love with you.”Â
“Earlier this year, my mom asked if we hadÂ
any plans to get married.”Â
“I used to say yes. ButÂ
now? The thought of marrying you doesn’t makeÂ
me happy. It just hurts.”Â
Even being in the same room with him. I noÂ
longer felt joy. Only suffocation.Â
Brady stared, stunned. He opened his mouth.Â
“Why?”Â
His voice cracked. Rough.Â
“I don’t want to be the person you’re always running away from when I actually need you.”Â
“I need someone who puts me first. NoÂ
excuses. No conditions.”Â
“That’s not you. You checked out and leaned toward Skyler a long time ago. I’m not gonna spend my whole life fighting another woman for leftovers of your attention in a relationship that’s already falling apart.”Â
Brady’s fingers trembled. LikeÂ
something was squeezing his heart.Â
“Paige, I don’t love Skyler. I help her becauseÂ
she’s a girl alone in a big city, and I feel bad for herÂ
“And what about me?” I said quietly. “Brady, the city I work in–I have no family there. When you felt bad for her, did you ever feel bad for me?”Â
He opened his mouth. Closed it. NothingÂ
came out.Â
Because he had no answer.Â
When he did all those things for Skyler, he never thought about me.Â
He always thought I could handle myself. That I was strong. Independent. Not like Skyler.Â
“I’m sorry.”Â
“Paige, I’ll cut her off. No more Skyler. Just us.Â
We can start over. I-”Â
“Paige.”Â
Evan opened the door next to mine. HeÂ
walked over slowly, like he didn’t even see Brady.Â
“Your mom said she packed us someÂ
homemade sausages. She asked me to grabÂ
them, but I don’t know where she put them. CanÂ
you help me find them?”Â
“Sure.”Â
I moved aside to let Evan through.Â
Brady’s eyes went wide. Panicked. He tried toÂ
step inside too.Â
I put my hand up. Blocked him.Â
“Brady. Last time I’m saying this. Let’s endÂ
this clean. Don’t make me regret ever being withÂ
you.”Â
“Paige-”Â
I didn’t let him finish. I closed the door. ShutÂ
him out.Â
Later, when my parents came home, Brady was long gone. But all his gift boxes were stillÂ
piled by the door.Â
I didn’t take them. I called a courier and hadÂ
them shipped to his office.Â
We’re done. No more loose ends.
