The Comeback: How I Destroyed the Friend Who Ruined Me Chapter 04

Author: Summer
In my past life, I died because of that lie.

I didn’t know anything about it. When Dominic came for me, I had no idea I was carrying that kind of weight. I tried to defend myself, but he never gave me the chance. He just had his men put me in the trunk of a Cadillac and ship me to Mexico.

But this time was different.

This time, I had witnesses.

Evelyn hung up. Dominic didn’t hesitate for one second.

He backhanded me across the face so hard my vision went white. The taste of blood filled my mouth. “You b*tch! No wonder you wouldn’t tell me where she was. You knew exactly what you did.”

The slap stunned me. My ears were ringing. I could feel the side of my face starting to swell.

I stared at him like he’d lost his mind. Maybe he had.

I knew Dominic was stupid. Evelyn couldn’t have been running around behind his back for this long otherwise. She had been lying to him for years, and he bought every single word.

But this? This wasn’t just stupid anymore. This was something else entirely.

I had been with him the whole night. He had guys watching my building. Dozens of people had seen me. Wouldn’t he at least ask when the miscarriage happened before swinging on me? Wouldn’t a normal person want to check the facts first?

No. He didn’t even think. He just blamed me. Immediately. Completely. Without a shred of evidence.

And the crowd followed his lead.

“I thought she was just greedy and easy,” someone yelled from the back. “But she’s straight up evil.”

“Stealing from your friend is one thing,” another voice called out. “But killing her baby? What did that poor woman ever do to deserve that?”

“No wonder she didn’t say anything when we were throwing stuff at her,” a third person added. “She knew she had something worse to hide.”

Julian was watching from the edge of the crowd. His face was pale. His eyes were empty. He didn’t look angry. He just looked tired. Like he had seen enough. Like he didn’t have any fight left in him.

He shook his head slowly. Then he turned around and walked away. He didn’t say a word. He didn’t look back.

Something inside me cracked. I had prepared myself for Dominic’s rage. I had prepared myself for the crowd’s hate. But I wasn’t prepared for Julian to leave. He was supposed to be the one person who stayed. And he just walked off like I wasn’t worth a second thought.

I kept my voice calm. It took everything I had. “Why don’t you ask Evelyn when she lost the baby before you decide anything?”

Dominic laughed right in my face. “Ask her what? I heard what she said. You pushed her.”

“You think my wife would lie to me?” He stepped closer, jabbing a finger at my chest. “You did this before I came to your place. That’s why you wouldn’t tell me where she was.”

“You covered your tracks, Scarlett. Just not good enough.”

His jaw was clenched so tight I thought his teeth might crack. Spittle flew from his mouth when he talked. He was completely out of control.

I felt tired. Really tired. Not just from the night, but from years of this. Years of being blamed for things I didn’t do. Years of being Evelyn’s scapegoat.

“You trust her that much?” I asked.

“Of course I do. She’s my wife.” He practically spat the words. “Why would I trust a parasite like you?”

“I asked you where she was. You lied. Now you’re caught, and you’re trying to squirm out of it.”

I looked at him for a long moment. The crowd was still shouting behind me, but I tuned them out. I focused on Dominic. On his red face. His wild eyes. His trembling hands.

Then I said it. Slow and clear. I wanted everyone to hear.

“What if I told you Evelyn didn’t lose that baby because of me? What if I told you she lost it because she was in bed with someone else? And that someone is your uncle Vincent.”

The effect was immediate.

Dominic’s whole body went still. His face didn’t move. It was like someone had hit pause on him.

Then his hand shot out and grabbed my throat. Hard. His fingers dug into my skin.

“You watch your f*cking mouth,” he said. His voice was low and quiet. That was worse than the yelling. Much worse. “You say another word about my family and I’ll have your tongue cut out before you hit the ground.”

I couldn’t breathe. But I didn’t look away.

“I’m not lying,” I choked out. “You can check. You have people. You have resources. Go see for yourself.”

He stared at me. His hand tightened on my throat. I could feel my pulse pounding against his fingers. The crowd had gone quiet. Even the influencers had stopped talking.

Then, slowly, he let go.

I gasped for air. My throat burned.

“If you’re lying,” he said, pointing a finger inches from my nose, “I won’t send you to Mexico. I’ll bury you in the desert myself. With my own two hands. And I’ll make sure your boyfriend watches.”

I swallowed hard. My voice came out hoarse. “I’m not lying. She’s at your uncle’s house right now. Why would she go to a regular hospital? Vincent has his own private doctor on payroll. Discreet. Off the books. No questions asked. That’s where he took her.”

Dominic’s face went pale. Not scared. Cold. The kind of cold that comes right before someone gets killed. I had seen that look before. It was the look of a man who was about to do something unforgivable.

“How do you know that?” he asked. His voice was barely a whisper.

“Because I’m not the one sleeping with him,” I said. “Evelyn is. She has been for months. Maybe longer. And now she’s lying in his bed while his personal patch up guy tries to stop the bleeding. Go see for yourself. Bring your crew. Let everyone see the truth.”

Dominic looked at me for a long time. The crowd was dead quiet now. Even the influencers had stopped talking into their phones. Everyone was watching. Waiting.

“Fine,” he said finally. “We’re going to Vincent’s. And if you’re feeding me bullsh*t, Scarlett, so help me God, you won’t see the sun rise tomorrow.”

He grabbed me by the arm and shoved me toward his car. His grip was so tight I knew there would be bruises.

I glanced back toward where Julian had been standing. He was gone. The space where he had stood was empty now. Just cold pavement and broken glass.

My chest ached. Not from Dominic’s hands. From something deeper. Something that felt like goodbye.

The influencers followed. Cameras still rolling. Phones still live. Millions of people still watching.
