The Rabbit Girl Who Shook the Walker Family Chapter 15
“This is slander!”Â
Ethan looked at her.Â
“I’m stating the records.”Â
“Whether it’s slander will be investigated by the police.”Â
Reporters pressed forward with questions atÂ
once.Â
“Mrs. Coleman, did you delete Ms. Reed’s distress message?”Â
“Did you participate in the five–million–dollarÂ
transfer?”Â
“Mr. John Walker, why did your company receiveÂ
this money?”Â
The scene became chaotic. Lily’s shouldersÂ
shrank. Lucas pulled her closer to his side. Old Mr. Walker picked up the microphone. His voice was not loud. But once he spoke, the hall slowlyÂ
quieted.Â
“The Walker family relied on a forged transferÂ
record back then.”Â
“For this matter, I’m responsible.”Â
“The Walker family will formally correct Emma’s reputation.”Â
“As for Lily’s identity, no one needs to guess.”Â
He raised a hand. The screen behind him switchedÂ
to the Walker family trust agreement. Ethan highlighted one clause in red.Â
First–priority protected subject under the Walker family trust:Â
Direct minor children of the main branch of Walker Holdings. Old Mr. Walker looked into the camera.Â
“Lily is Lucas’s child.”Â
“From today on, she enters the first–priority protection list of the Walker family trust.”Â
Someone below asked, “Do you mean she will become the Walker family heir?”Â
Old Mr. Walker did not avoid the question.Â
“She is the only direct child of this generation inÂ
the Walker family.”Â
Lucas took the microphone. He looked down andÂ
glanced at Lily. The little girl held the stuffedÂ
rabbit, her shoe tips pressed together. He lookedÂ
up and pulled the microphone half an inch closer.Â
“She is not some secret I refused to claim.”Â
“She is my child.”Â
The sound of shutters grew dense again. LilyÂ
looked up at him.Â
She didn’t know exactly what “secret daughter”Â
meant.Â
But she understood the second half. She was hisÂ
child.Â
She asked softly, “Then can my last name beÂ
Walker?”Â
The microphone was still on. Her question wasÂ
picked up. The hall went quiet for a moment.Â
Lucas crouched down. He met her eyes.Â
“Yes.”Â
Lily asked again, “Will Mommy know?”Â
Lucas’s throat tightened.Â
“She will.”Â
Old Mr. Walker turned his face away. Ethan closedÂ
the next file and did not open it immediately. LilyÂ
hugged the stuffed rabbit to her chest. She gave aÂ
small smile.Â
“Then I want to write it for Mommy to see.”Â
After the press conference ended, Rachel wasÂ
blocked by the media in the hallway. She tried toÂ
take Sophie and leave. Ethan Walker’s assistantÂ
stopped her.Â
“Mrs. Coleman, the police are already on theirÂ
way.”Â
John snapped, “What are you trying to do?”Â
Ethan walked over.Â
“The police have questions.”Â
John sneered.Â
“Some old family accounts, and you’re reallyÂ
taking this to the police?”Â
Ethan handed him a document.Â
“It’s not an old account.”Â
“It involves suspected evidence forgery,Â
misappropriation of funds, defamation of a minor,Â
and invasion of privacy.”Â
Rachel’s legs went weak. Sophie burst into tears. Lily stood not far away. She watched Sophie cry, her fingers pinching the rabbit’s ear. She wanted toÂ
go over. Lucas stopped her.Â
“Lily.”Â
Lily looked up.Â
“She’s crying too.”Â
Lucas said, “That’s not your fault.”Â
Lily thought about it. She looked down and searched in her backpack. There was still one littleÂ
rabbit sticker inside. She did not walk over. SheÂ
only placed the sticker on a nearby table.Â
“Give it to her.”Â
“When she cries, she can look at the little rabbit.”Â
Lucas looked at her.Â
“You’re not angry?”Â
Lily thought seriously for a while.Â
“I am.”Â
“But Mommy said when a child does somethingÂ
wrong, grown–ups have to teach first.”Â
She turned to Rachel again. Her voice was small.Â
“Her Mommy didn’t teach her well.”Â
Ethan heard it. He looked down at the file in hisÂ
hand. After a few seconds, he continued walkingÂ
forward. That night, for the first time, the WalkerÂ
estate dining table had a small set of tablewareÂ
besides the four adult sets. A yellow bowl. A smallÂ
spoon.Â
And a rabbit cup. Lily sat beside Lucas. After everyÂ
two bites, she looked up at everyone once. Old Mr.Â
Walker frowned.Â
“What are you looking at?”Â
Lily whispered, “I’m counting.”Â
“To see whether everyone will still be hereÂ
tomorrow.”Â
Lucas placed peeled shrimp into her bowl.Â
“No need to count.”Â
Old Mr. Walker pushed over an egg too.Â
“Eat.”Â
Ethan put down his phone.Â
“I’ll take you to daycare tomorrow.”Â
Lily’s eyes brightened at once.Â
“Will you wear an animal costume?”Â
Ethan’s hand paused. Lucas glanced at him.Â
“What animal costume?”Â
Lily explained eagerly, “Family Sports Day.”Â
“Uncle Ethan has to wear one.”Â
Old Mr. Walker coughed.
