I Was Never the Woman in Focus Chapter 08
“That’s not true! You were never just a maid to me!” Zion’s voice cracked, his eyes red andÂ
swollen. “I love you, Kelly! I was just… careless. IÂ
got used to having you by my side, and I foolishly thought you’d never leave.”Â
He tried to grab her wrist again, but she pulled away sharply.Â
“Don’t touch me.” Kelly’s gaze turned cold. “Careless. That’s a convenient excuse.”Â
She nodded toward the dazzling aurora above them.Â
“When you shot aurora photos for Selena and others, you adjusted your camera aperture down to the decimal point. When you picked gifts for them, you chose shades and materials withÂ
meticulous care.”Â
“But with me? You were always ‘careless‘?”Â
She let out a cold laugh and stepped back, puttingÂ
more distance between them.Â
“Be honest. You weren’t careless. You wereÂ
selfish.”Â
“You loved the vanity and sense of being neededÂ
that women like Selena gave you. At the sameÂ
time, you took for granted the stability and safe. harbor I provided you.”Â
Her words stripped away every layer of hisÂ
pretense. Zion froze in place, opening his mouth.Â
but unable to argue. She was right aboutÂ
everything. He’d reveled in this one–sidedÂ
relationship for years.Â
“I can change,” he choked out, like a child who’dÂ
misbehaved. “From now on, I’ll adjust everyÂ
camera setting only for you. I’ll give all myÂ
patience only to you. Just give me one moreÂ
chance. Please.”Â
He even dropped to his knees, ready to beg.Â
Kelly watched his breakdown quietly. Three months ago, this sight might have softened herÂ
heart. Now she felt nothing but empty calm.Â
“Zion.” She pulled her coat collar tighter againstÂ
the cold. “Do you know why I chose Norway?”Â
Zion looked up at her through tear–blurred eyes.Â
“I wanted to see for myself just how beautiful theÂ
auroras were–the ones that made you abandonÂ
me time and again.”Â
She turned to face the glowing green ribbon.Â
stretching across the sky.Â
“I’ve watched them for two months. They areÂ
breathtaking.”Â
“But waiting for auroras out on the tundra at thirtyÂ
degrees below zero is freezing.” She glanced back.Â
at him one last time.Â
“I’ve been frozen through for a long time now.”Â
“So don’t come looking for me again. I don’t wantÂ
you anymore.”Â
With that, she turned and walked toward the cabin, her steps steady and resolute amid the snow.Â
“Kelly!” Zion shouted her name in agony. “Don’t go! Please, don’t leave me!”Â
Kelly never looked back. Her figure faded into theÂ
wind and snow.Â
Zion collapsed fully onto the snow. The velvet box slipped from his hand, and the expensive diamond ring rolled away into a snowdrift, lost forever.Â
He finally understood. Some moments, once lost,Â
can never be reclaimed. Belated love is worth lessÂ
than weeds.Â
Over eight years, he’d turned a woman who lovedÂ
him wholeheartedly into ice. And this ice wouldÂ
never melt for him again.Â
Thick snowflakes swirled down, covering hisÂ
shoulders. He stood motionless in the wilderness,Â
a lonely tombstone for the love he’d destroyedÂ
with his own hands.
