The Bride He Was Warned Not to Marry Chapter 02
When I woke up again, everything was white.
Sarah rushed over, her eyes red-rimmed. Her fingers were all wrapped in gauze.
“Emily? How are you feeling? You scared me to death.”
The concern and worry on her face looked just as they always did. There was just a trace of guilt underneath, hard to notice.
A thousand tiny pinpricks of pain shot through my body.
I stared intently at her face. “Do you really hate William that much?”
She frowned without hesitation. “Of course! Trust me. He’s a total player. You have no idea he actually—”
“Sarah! Are you done yet?”
William came through the door, cutting her off sharply.
“Emily can judge for herself how I treat her. She doesn’t need you poisoning her against me!”
I looked at William, then quietly put the earbuds back in.
A second later, the voice of William from ten years later slithered into my mind.
“Good thing I got here in time. Sarah is way too naive. She thinks if she confesses, Emily won’t get hurt. But she doesn’t realize Emily doesn’t care about their history at all.”
Ten years from now, after finding out about their betrayal, I would lose my mind.
I would push Sarah down a flight of stairs, then harm Sarah severely, completely out of control.
William would personally send me to prison.
Right now, he was stopping Sarah from confessing just to protect her from me.
I slowly pulled my hand out of Sarah’s palm.
All the strength drained out of me.
“William, I’m asking you one last time. Are we still getting married?”
William rubbed the top of my head, confused. “What are you talking about? If I’m not marrying you, who else would I marry?”
His eyes drifted toward Sarah as he spoke. Their eyes met, as if I wouldn’t notice.
Then his future voice came through again. “What does Emily mean by that? The fake courthouse cost two million dollars, and it’s done today. All the actors are trained. She doesn’t want to go through with it?”
“Or is she jealous because you saved Sarah at the restaurant and not her?”
William’s expression changed instantly. He crouched in front of me and quickly explained, “Emily, it was an emergency. I know how much Sarah means to you. If she got hurt, you’d feel even worse. I didn’t overthink it.”
“I promise, next time I’ll save you first.”
My nails pressed hard into my palms until my skin stung badly
What a ridiculous excuse.
His mouth said he loved me, but his body instinctively protected someone else.
I thought back to a year ago.
My parents died in a sudden car accident, and I lost my job right before my probation period ended because the boss hired his nephew.
Overnight, I felt like the whole world had abandoned me.
Back then, I locked myself at home and refused to see anyone.
Sarah showed up with a few friends and convinced me to open the door.
When I was trapped in low spirits and unable to calm down, William grabbed my hand. In the struggle, a broken glass cut his arm, leaving a scar he never bothered to hide.
He said, “Emily, don’t be afraid. No matter what happens, I’ll always be here for you.”
Sarah promised me, “If anyone ever wrongs you, I’ll be the first in line to get justice for you.”
But now, the ones hurting me the most were the same two people who swore they loved me and would protect me.
In my head, their past kindness clashed with their betrayal.
My eyes burned. I almost bit through my lip.
Then Sarah suddenly gagged, covered her mouth, and ran to the bathroom.
William started to follow her, then stopped when he glanced back at me, but the worry in his eyes was impossible to miss.
“Sarah is pregnant. She knows Emily can’t have kids, so she planned to have the baby alone and then give it to Emily.”
“Sarah has suffered so much, always thinking about Emily. And Emily never appreciates any of it.”
Every time the future William mentioned me, his voice dripped with undisguised disgust.
His words cut deep.
I remembered noticing earlier that Sarah’s lower belly looked slightly swollen.
She tried to hide it, saying she just ate too much.
I never suspected her.
Sarah came out of the bathroom, pale-faced. “My stomach’s been off the last couple of days. Probably something I ate.”
I cut her off. “Do you remember why I can’t get pregnant?”
