He Chose The Maid Over The Heiress Chapter 07
Kimberly POVÂ
I stood watch from the balcony of the master bedroom.Â
The rain had evolved into a relentless downpour, scrubbing the city clean. Yet, down at the gate, the filth was just arriving.Â
A yellow taxi pulled up, hesitating at the threshold before. grinding to a halt. The driver got out, shouting something lostÂ
to the wind.Â
Austyn emerged next. He was instantly soaked, his expensive Italian suit clinging to his frame like a second, desperate skin.Â
He pointed at the gate. He pointed at the house.Â
The driver simply shook his head, got back in his cab, and drove away. He left them stranded.Â
Austyn stood in the rain. Evalena huddled next to him, shivering in a cardigan that definitely wasn’t mine. She looked small. Pathetic.Â
I picked up the walkie–talkie from the table.Â
“Let them in,” I said. “Just to the driveway.”Â
The gates groaned open.Â
Austyn grabbed two trash bags from the pile on the curb and marched up the driveway. He looked determined. He still looked like a man who believed he had leverage.Â
I made my way downstairs.Â
I met them on the front steps. I didn’t have an umbrella. I stood under the portico, dry and untouchable, while theyÂ
drowned in the storm.Â
“Kimberly!” Austyn shouted over the roar of the rain. “This is insanity! Open the door!”Â
“No,” I said.Â
He dropped the bags. He walked up the steps. Luca stepped in front of him. Austyn collided with Luca’s chest as if he had run full–tilt into a concrete pillar.Â
“Get out of my way!” Austyn screamed. “That is my wife!”Â
“Ex–wife,” I corrected.Â
Austyn looked at me past Luca’s shoulder. His hair wasÂ
plastered to his forehead, his eyes wild. He looked manic.Â
“You can’t do this. I have rights. I have residency!”Â
“You have fraud charges pending,” I said calmly. “And grand. larceny.”Â
Evalena stepped up beside him. She wasn’t wearing the Chanel. coat anymore. She was wearing pure fear.Â
“Kimberly,” she said, her voice trembling. “Please. My son is.Â
cold.”Â
I looked at the boy. Jaylin was sitting on top of the pile of wet. clothes by the gate, crying.Â
“You should have considered his comfort before you stole from the hand that fed you,” I said.Â
Austyn tried to push past Luca again. “I need my car! TheÂ
Rolls is mine!”Â
Luca laughed. It was a dry, humorless sound.Â
“The car is company property,” Luca said. “You are no longer.Â
an employee.”Â
Austyn turned to me. “I need a way to leave! You can’t justÂ
leave us here!”Â
I nodded to Luca.Â
Luca snapped his fingers.Â
Two guards stepped forward. They weren’t looking at Austyn. They were looking at Evalena.Â
“Ma’am,” one of the guards said. “The watch.”Â
Evalena clutched her wrist. “What?”Â
“The Patek Philippe,” the guard said. “And the diamond studs.Â
And the tennis bracelet.”Â
“Those are gifts!” she shrieked.Â
“Bought with stolen funds,” I said. “That makes them evidence.Â
Seize them.”Â
Evalena tried to back away, but the guards were faster. They didn’t hurt her, but they weren’t gentle. One held her arm while the other unclasped the watch..Â
She screamed like she was being flayed. “Austyn! Do something!”Â
Austyn stood there. He watched them strip his mistress of theÂ
jewelry he had bought with my money. He didn’t move. He didn’t speak. He knew that if he raised a hand, Luca wouldÂ
shatter it.Â
The guard handed me the watch. It was heavy. Warm from her.Â
skin.Â
I looked at it. It was a beautiful piece. It was worth more than Austyn’s entire existence.Â
I slid it into my pocket.Â
“Now,” I said. “You can go.”Â
Austyn stared at me. His eyes were wide, hollow pits..Â
“How are we supposed to leave?” he whispered.Â
I pointed to the open gate.Â
“The same way you came into this world, Austyn. With nothing.”Â
He looked at the pile of wet clothes. He looked at the long,Â
dark road.Â
I saw the realization hit him. The Miller name wasn’t a shieldÂ
anymore; it was the sword at his throat.Â
He grabbed a trash bag. He grabbed Evalena’s hand.Â
They walked back down the driveway.Â
I watched them until they were swallowed by the rain..
