The Luna’s Last Drop Chapter 07
Scarlett cried for a very long time. Nurses walkedÂ
past her one after another, yet all chose to look theÂ
other way.Â
Whispers soon spread around her.Â
“Isn’t that the ungrateful little pup?”Â
“I heard she was the one who handed the pen toÂ
Luna. She practically killed her own mother.”Â
“Shh, Alpha is inside.”Â
Scarlett couldn’t fully understand their words, yetÂ
she could feel the cold shift in their stares, as ifÂ
they were looking at something filthy andÂ
loathsome.Â
She wiped away her tears and hurried towardÂ
Selene’s room.Â
She pushed the door open abruptly and saw Selene leaning half upright in bed, admiring herÂ
reflection in the mirror. Her cheeks were flushed,Â
her eyes bright and full of energy.Â
The moment she spotted Scarlett, disgust flashed across Selene’s face. “Who said you could comeÂ
in?”Â
Scarlett hesitated for a moment before steppingÂ
forward timidly. “Selene, I fell down and it hurts soÂ
much…”Â
She reached out to tug Selene’s sleeve, but SeleneÂ
flinched away sharply as if burned. “Don’t touchÂ
me!”Â
Scarlett froze in place. Selene glanced at theÂ
bloodstain on her dress and let out a cold sneer.Â
“You reek of blood, just like your mother. Such aÂ
cursed little jinx.”Â
Scarlett’s face turned deathly pale. “You once saidÂ
you loved me most. You promised you would takeÂ
me to the dance show if Mommy couldn’t come…”Â
Selene broke into icy laughter. “You actuallyÂ
believed that? I only said it to get under her skin.”Â
Scarlett’s lips trembled uncontrollably.Â
Selene wiped her sleeves with a tissue, her toneÂ
filled with repulsion. “I’ve always hated otherÂ
people’s pups. Why would I ever take you in?Â
Besides, you’re a pup who helped an outsider killÂ
her own mother. Who would ever want someoneÂ
like you?”Â
“I didn’t!” Scarlett burst into tears.Â
Selene leaned down, her voice hissing like aÂ
venomous snake. “You didn’t? Weren’t you the oneÂ
who handed her the pen? Weren’t you the one whoÂ
begged her to sign it right before she died? Scarlett, you turned out to be far more useful thanÂ
I ever imagined.”Â
Scarlett burst into tears. “No! You said she wouldÂ
get better! You said Mommy wouldn’t really die!”Â
Selene glared at her and pressed the call bell.Â
“Nurse, take her away. Her crying is giving me aÂ
splitting headache.”Â
A nurse walked in. She looked at Scarlett’sÂ
tear–streaked face with pity in her eyes, but sheÂ
still dragged Scarlett out by force.Â
Scarlett didn’t dare go back to Selene. She ranÂ
back to the operating room. Kieran was still there,Â
clutching my sweater tightly, his face buried in theÂ
fabric.Â
Scarlett walked over slowly, “Daddy?”Â
Kieran looked up. His eyes were bloodshot, hollow,Â
staring into an abyss of despair.Â
Scarlett flinched. “Daddy, Selene won’t teach meÂ
the dance anymore.”Â
Kieran stared at her for a long while beforeÂ
speaking in a hoarse voice rough as rusted metal. “Why did you force your mother to sign those. papers? Didn’t you know she was already dying?”Â
Tears streamed freely down Scarlett’s cheeks. “I didn’t know! Selene said she would get better! I just wanted someone to go to the dance with me!”Â
Kieran kept his gaze fixed firmly on her. “And the night of the car accident? Why did you beg me to save Selene? She was your mother! Your realÂ
mother!”Â
Crushed by his accusations, Scarlett broke downÂ
completely. “You said she was strong! You saidÂ
she would be fine after staying one night in theÂ
pack hospital! I truly thought she would be fine!”Â
Kieran squeezed his eyes shut tightly, as if he had just received a heavy slap in the face. ThoseÂ
words had come straight from his own mouth,Â
and Scarlett had merely chosen to believe him.Â
But Vivian was gone forever.Â
A low bitter laugh escaped his throat, which soonÂ
turned into violent painful coughs.Â
He finally came to realize that their mate bond had shattered beyond repair. Overwhelmed by belatedÂ
agony, he coughed relentlessly until fresh bloodÂ
stained his palms.Â
He held the wool sweater even tighter, and the last shred of his sanity crumbled away.Â
That night, Scarlett was sent back home.Â
She pushed open her bedroom door and saw her wardrobe standing wide open, lined with neatly pressed dance dresses. In the top drawer lay ribbons, hair clips and spare dance shoesÂ
arranged in perfect order.Â
A note was stuck there: [Scarlett has rehearsal on Friday. White ribbons are in the secondÂ
compartment on the left. Remember to drink warm water after practice.]Â
Scarlett stared at the note for a long time, then threw herself forward and buried her face deep in the white ribbon. “Mommy…”Â
She shook all over as she cried, yet the roomÂ
remained dead silent. No one would ever walk in to pat her head softly and whisper that Mommy was right there by her side ever again.
