From Fat Girl to Fated Mate Chapter 04
After stopping the steroids, my weight started dropping fast.Â
Years of ballet had given me a great foundation, so I ate healthy and exercised every day. Within a month, I’d lost twenty pounds.Â
My mom made me salad every day. And Julian, after hearing what I was going through, came with me to every checkup.Â
“You’re going to be fine,” he always said. “I believe in you.”Â
And every time I saw that gentle look in his eyes, my wolf would howl softly.Â
But I kept pretending it wasn’t happening.Â
By the second month, my ankle had fully healed. I practiced that dance routine until I could do it in my sleep.Â
My mom went to the school and came home with my uniform.Â
She was clearly angry.Â
“XL. The club president said it was the largest theyÂ
had. And she was rude about it.”Â
“It’s okay, Mom.” I held the uniform up to myself. “If I suck in my stomach, I can probably fit into it.”Â
At nearly five foot seven and 140 pounds, with myÂ
posture restored, I no longer looked like the fat girlÂ
I used to be.Â
My mom hugged me tight. “They never really sawÂ
you before. Not once.”Â
I hugged her back. “I’ll make them see.”Â
I swore it.Â
The night before the meet, the class group chatÂ
exploded. Everyone was hyping up our grade’sÂ
cheer squad.Â
“Is Jessica going to be the school’s headÂ
cheerleader?”Â
“Do you even need to ask? Obviously!”Â
Then someone joked, “Wouldn’t it be funny if JosieÂ
got captain instead?”Â
The replies flooded in:Â
“That’d be a miracle.”Â
“Hope Ethan doesn’t throw up on the spot.”Â
I put down my phone, took a deep breath, andÂ
stepped on the scale.Â
I let out a breath when I saw the number.Â
The next morning, I stood at the side of the road inÂ
my uniform, trying to hail a taxi. A private car pulled up in front of me. The window rolled down.Â
Julian smiled. “Need a ride?”Â
“I’m going to school,” I said, surprised. “Are youÂ
sure?”Â
“I’m headed that way anyway. My cousin forgot hisÂ
gear. I’m dropping it off.”Â
I got in the car. Soft music played. We drove inÂ
comfortable silence until I spoke. “Which cousin?”Â
“Ethan,” Julian said, glancing at me. “He’s myÂ
cousin.”Â
I was completely blindsided.Â
“Oh.” I stared blankly ahead. “I… had no idea.”Â
He dropped me off at the back entrance. I thankedÂ
Julian quickly and ran toward the classroom. IÂ
didn’t realize I’d left my uniform in his passengerÂ
seat until I got there.Â
I couldn’t go back now. He was probably longÂ
gone. And I didn’t have my phone either. Damn it.Â
To make things worse, Jessica and her squadÂ
were coming down the hall.Â
As soon as they saw me, they stopped dead.Â
“Josie? I can’t believe you actually showed up.”Â
“Did she… lose weight or something?”Â
I was still wearing my old XXXL hoodie, baggyÂ
enough to hide all the changes.Â
“Come on, you’re imagining things.”Â
“If anything, I think she gained more.”Â
Jessica gave a sarcastic smirk. “Since you’re here,Â
come get ready with us.”Â
I hesitated. “I left my uniform in a friend’s car. IÂ
might need a spare.”Â
Their faces twisted.Â
“Are you serious? You lost your uniform? Why don’tÂ
you just lose yourself while you’re at it?”Â
“The performance is in two hours. You did this onÂ
purpose!”Â
“Fat, cowardly, and careless. How can one personÂ
have so many flaws?”Â
I dug my nails into my palms. Why now, of allÂ
times? Why couldn’t I just get one thing right forÂ
once?Â
Then footsteps echoed down the hall.Â
“Josie.” Julian walked over, holding my garmentÂ
bag. “You forgot this.”Â
Then he looked coldly at the girls, his usual warmÂ
smile completely gone.
