He Married Me for the Heart Inside My Chest Chapter 12
Silas found me in the middle of a torrentialÂ
downpour.Â
He stood outside Wren’s apartment building, soaked to the bone, looking like a stray.Â
“Lila, I’m taking those articles down. Don’t believeÂ
any of it.”Â
He stood on the other side of the iron gate, hisÂ
voice hoarse.Â
I held a black umbrella, looking down at him.Â
“Taking them down? You think you can erase everything Vera posted?”Â
He froze, disbelief flashing in his eyes. “You’re saying… Vera did this?”Â
“Silas, are you refusing to believe it, or just scaredÂ
to?”Â
I let out a cold laugh, pulled a stack of photos from my bag and tossed them over the gate to hisÂ
feet.Â
The photos scattered in the rain. They showedÂ
him laying flowers at Maplewood Cemetery, VeraÂ
standing a few feet away, watching his back.Â
“She’s been watching you. Watching Elowen. EvenÂ
watching my heart.”Â
“Your so–called love? To her, it’s just an opening.”Â
Silas bent to pick up the photos, rain dripping offÂ
his fingers.Â
“She was just a friend… I never thought she’d…”Â
“You never thought about a lot of things.”Â
I cut him off. “Did you know the fake will wasÂ
written by Vera, copying your tone? Just to turnÂ
me against you.”Â
“I didn’t write it!” He lunged toward the gate. “Lila, IÂ
never saw you as a vessel!”Â
“Really?”Â
I snapped my umbrella shut, letting the rain soak.Â
- me.Â
“Then tell me why did you take me to Elowen’sÂ
favorite steakhouse on my birthday?”Â
“Why did you check my heartbeat first when IÂ
passed out in the shower, instead of checking if IÂ
hit my head?”Â
Silas’s mouth hung open, no words coming out.Â
“Are those things Vera’s fault too?”Â
I stepped closer to the gate, staring into his eyes.Â
“Face it, Silas. You loved the ghost. I was just anÂ
expensive urn.”Â
He stumbled back, his face as white as chalkÂ
under the streetlights.Â
“That’s not true… It’s not…”Â
The sharp bite of words, the thrill of tearingÂ
someone down–it twisted in my chest, a bitterÂ
rush.Â
But I knew it wasn’t enough.Â
Vera was still in the shadows, waiting to pick upÂ
the pieces.Â
She wanted me to snap completely.Â
“Come home with me.”Â
Silas grabbed the gate, his eyes wild withÂ
desperation.Â
“I’ll give you everything–shares, property. I’ll sign itÂ
all over to you.”Â
“You’re buying me off?”Â
“I’m saving you! Everyone’s calling you names. I’mÂ
the only one who can protect you!”Â
Listen to that. The classic move–strippingÂ
someone of their choices.Â
He thought money and status could fix everything.Â
Thought if he wrapped me in his protection, I’d beÂ
grateful enough to crawl back.Â
“Saving me?”Â
I laughed softly, the sound hollow in the rain.Â
“Silas, you killed me the day you decided to lie to get close to me.”Â
I turned and walked into the elevator, never lookingÂ
back.Â
His desperate shouts echoed behind me, fading into the storm.Â
Back inside the apartment, I saw Vera’s InstagramÂ
post.Â
[All replacements end up back where they belong.]Â
The photo was an old college picture–Silas smiling, Vera staring at him from the side.Â
I typed a cold comment.Â
[But once you break the urn, the ghost inside isÂ
gone forever.]
