Seven Years of Devotion: He Left Me to Die, I Left Him for Good Chapter 08
Life after the divorce was quieter than I had expected.Â
I left my previous job and took an administrative position at a private hospital.Â
My leg gradually healed. It still ached when I walked too fast, but it didn’t affect my daily life.Â
Six months later, I met Victor Lane at a medicalÂ
conference.Â
He was the doctor who had examined me at the medical station in Vespera.Â
“Clara?” He recognized me and handed me a cup of warm water with a smile. “You’veÂ
recovered well.”Â
Victor was gentle, speaking in an unhurried way that put people at ease.Â
We began to see more of each other.Â
We would occasionally have meals together, talking about medicine, about the evacuation.Â
He never asked about Adrian. On rainy days, he would simply remind me to wear a knee brace.Â
Adrian, however, didn’t disappear like I had expected.Â
He began appearing in my life more and more often.Â
When my car broke down, it was returned the next day, fully repaired. The shop said someone had already paid.Â
When I worked late, a delivery driver would bring hot food, saying it was ordered by Adrian.Â
Even outside my parents‘ house, expensive supplements kept showing up.Â
I returned everything.Â
Until one day, Adrian blocked my way after work.Â
He had a new car, dressed impeccably, holding a large bouquet of red roses.Â
“Clara, marry me again.”Â
He dropped to one knee in front of everyone.Â
“I’ve been reflecting these past six months. I know I was wrong. Without you, my life has been a mess.”Â
People around us began to cheer.Â
“Say yes! Say yes!”Â
I looked at Adrian and found it almostÂ
ridiculous.Â
“Adrian, is this a performance?” I asked coldly.Â
“I mean it!” Adrian said urgently. “I’ve already sent Sophie away. She’ll never show up in our lives again. I’ve transferred all my properties to your name. Clara… come back.”Â
Just then, Victor’s car pulled over by the roadside.Â
He stepped out and naturally took the bag from my hand.Â
“Let’s go. Our reservation’s about to be missed,” Victor said casually.Â
He didn’t even glance at Adrian, as if there were nothing there at all.Â
Adrian’s face turned deathly ashen.Â
He stood up and pointed at Victor.Â
“Who is he? Clara, you moved on that fast?” Adrian demanded angrily.Â
“Is that any of your business?” I asked indifferently.Â
I slipped my arm through Victor’s.Â
“Adrian, have some dignity,” I said coldly.Â
Adrian’s eyes reddened, like a provoked animal.Â
“You’re only with him to get back at me, right? What does he have that I don’t? He’s just a doctor. What can he give you?”Â
Victor stopped and turned around.Â
He adjusted his glasses, his tone calm.Â
“Mr. Foster, I’m a doctor. But I wouldn’t abandon my wife in a war zone. In that regard, I am better than you.”Â
The words struck like a blade, precise andÂ
unforgiving.Â
The cheering stopped instantly.Â
People began whispering and pointing.Â
“So that’s the guy…”Â
“Isn’t he the one from the news?”Â
Under the weight of their judgment, Adrian lowered his head in humiliation.Â
The roses slipped from his hand, petals scattering into the muddy water.Â
I didn’t look back. I got into Victor’s car.Â
As the car pulled away, his figure grew smaller in the rearview mirror.Â
Like a joke.Â
Adrian fell apart completely.Â
I heard he got drunk at an important company meeting, caused a scene, and even cursed out his boss.Â
He was stripped of his position and demoted to a regular employee.Â
And Sophie hadn’t been sent away like he claimed.Â
She showed up pregnant, insisting the child.Â
was Adrian’s.Â
Adrian denied it. They ended up fighting in the office, making a public spectacle.Â
A paternity test later confirmed the child wasn’t his.Â
It belonged to one of his former rivals.Â
Sophie had been a corporate spy from the beginning. She got close to Adrian to steal that so–called confidential file.Â
And that file had already been leaked during the chaos at the border.Â
Adrian not only lost his job, but also faced massive compensation claims from theÂ
company.Â
These were stories former colleagues told me, like jokes.Â
I just smiled faintly.Â
People like him always got what they deserved.
