Seven Years of Devotion: He Left Me to Die, I Left Him for Good Chapter 06

Seven Years of Devotion: He Left Me to Die, I Left Him for Good Chapter 06

We arrived at the airport, preparing to board.

It was a charter flight arranged by the embassy, flying directly to Kingsport.

Adrian walked over, holding two firstclass tickets.

Clara, I upgraded us. Your leg needs the space up front.”

I didn’t even glance at the tickets.

My seat is in economy.”

Leaning on my crutch, I headed straight for the economy cabin.

Clara! Can you stop this?”

Adrian grabbed my arm from behind.

There are people everywhere. Can you not

make a scene and embarrass me?”

People around us turned to look.

Some recognized me and began whispering.

Isn’t that the woman who got left behind?”

Yeah, I heard her husband ran off with his mistress and abandoned her in the war zone.”

Shameless. And now he’s acting like the good guy.”

Adrian’s expression flickered, his face draining of color one moment and darkening the next.

He hadn’t expected the rumors to spread so fast.

Let go,I said coldly.

Adrian released me.

He clenched his jaw and took a deep breath.

Fine. If you’re sitting in economy, so am I.”

He turned and tore up the firstclass ticket in Sophie’s hand.

Sophie gasped. Adrian, what about me…

You’re in economy too!Adrian snapped.

The plane took off.

I leaned against the window, watching the

clouds below.

Adrian sat beside me, restless and uneasy.

Clara, about SophieI want to explain,he said. in a low voice. She really was sick. And she’s an orphan. She has no one in this world. If I didn’t help her, I couldn’t live with myself.”

What about me?I turned to look at him. I have parents. Does that mean I deserve to die?”

That’s not what I meant”

Adrian, we were married for three years and together for four,I said calmly. In seven years, I never realized your conscience only works for certain people. When we get back, I’m filing for divorce.”

That’s not happening!Adrian snapped. I won’t agree to it! Clara, I know I was wrong this time, but I didn’t cheat! Sophie and I are innocent! You’re divorcing me over one evacuation decision? Isn’t that too impulsive?”

Innocent?I let out a quiet laugh.

I pulled out my cracked phone and opened the gallery.

It was a screenshot I had recovered at the

hospital.

Sophie had posted it on the day of evacuation,

then deleted it within seconds.

But a friend of mine in IT had captured it and

sent it to me.

In the photo, Sophie sat in the front passenger seat of the SUV, fanning herself with that so-

called confidential file.”

The caption read, A special journey, with my personal knight by my side.”

Adrian stared at the image, his pupils shrinking.

What the”

This is your confidential file?I said, pointing at the photo. And this is the girl who couldn’t

sit in the front seat?”

Adrian had no answer.

Cold sweat formed on his forehead.

And there’s more.”

I swiped to the next image.

It showed him peeling chocolate for Sophie in the car. Another post she had made, hidden from him.

Adrian, you disgust me.”

I put my phone away and closed my eyes.

Don’t talk to me again. I might actually throw up on this plane.”

Adrian collapsed back into his seat, as if all the strength had been drained out of him.

He turned and stared at Sophie in the back row.

Sophie shrank into her seat, hiding behind a teddy bear, trembling. 2

The plane hit turbulence and shook violently.

Just like our seven years together.

Finally crashing down.
