Seven Years of Devotion: He Left Me to Die, I Left Him for Good Chapter 05

He looked disheveled, his shirt wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot. 

The moment he saw me lying in bed, he stopped short. 

His gaze fell on the cast on my leg and the bandages around my head. 

For a split second, I saw fear in his eyes. 

Real fear. 

“Clara…” His voice trembled as he rushed toward me. 

“Don’t touch me,” I said, opening my eyes and looking at him coldly. 

Adrian’s hand froze midair. 

“You… you’re okay… that’s all that matters…” 

His voice broke. 

“The video cut off that day, I thought… I thought 

you-” 

“You thought I was dead?” I let out a faint, mocking smile. “Sorry to disappoint you.” 

“How can you say that!” Adrian shouted, his eyes reddening. “Do you have any idea what I’ve been through these past two days? I searched every hospital. I checked the lists of the dead-” 

“If you had let me get in the car that day, I wouldn’t be here,” I cut him off. 

Adrian froze. 

He opened his mouth, as if trying to explain. 

“It was… it was an emergency…” 

“Because Sophie has war anxiety, right?” 

I held his gaze. 

“Adrian, do you know what happened? The person sitting next to me in that truck was shot dead. His brain matter splattered onto my sleeve.” 

Adrian’s face went ashen instantly. 

He staggered back, as if I had slapped him. 

“I’m sorry…” 

He lowered his head, his voice barely audible. 

“Clara, I know I was wrong. I’ll make it up to you. When we get back, we’ll go to the best hospital. I’ll find you the best doctors-” 

“No need.” I pointed toward the entrance. “Get out.” 

“Clara…” 

“Get out!” I grabbed the glass by my pillow and hurled it at his feet. 

The glass shattered, water splashing across his pants. 

Adrian flinched. 

He had never seen me like this before. 

The Clara he knew had been gentle, composed, always putting others first. 

But that Clara had died in the ruins of Dorzan. 

Adrian clenched his jaw and gave me one last look. 

“Calm down for now. I’ll wait outside. We’ll talk when you’ve cooled off.” 

He turned and walked out. 

As the tent flap fell, I caught sight of Sophie standing outside. 

She peeked in, unable to hide the unease on her face. 

Seeing that I was alive, she seemed… disappointed. 

I closed my eyes and took a slow breath. 

This was only the beginning. 

I stayed in the hospital in Vespera for three days before being arranged for evacuation back home. 

Adrian followed the entire way. 

He tried to act like the perfect, devoted husband. 

When I couldn’t walk, he brought over a wheelchair and tried to lift me into it. 

I avoided his hands and called for a nurse instead. 

At meals, he carefully removed every fish bone. and held it out to me. 

I pushed the plate away and took a bite of dry bread instead. 

Sophie trailed behind the whole time, like a mistreated wife. 

She didn’t dare speak to me. She just looked at Adrian with those pitiful eyes, as if I were the one mistreating them.
