He Left Me During My Miscarriage to Support His Ex—1 Year Later, He Returned to My DIVORCE Papers Chapter 02
It had snowed unexpectedly one day exactly a year prior.
I’d slipped and fallen on my commute home from work.
The pavement had turned slick overnight; no one had prepared for the sudden blizzard.
Thin sheets of ice coated every stretch of road.
One single fall had left me bleeding heavily.
Fresh scarlet blood seeped into the undisturbed snow, stark and impossible to overlook.
Passersby and my coworkers all stared, alarmed by the sight.
Shock washed over me, and a dull, tearing ache flared deep in my lower stomach.
An ambulance rushed me to the hospital, and the doctor delivered the news flatly.
“You’ve suffered a miscarriage. Did you even know you were pregnant?”
I shook my head.
I’d tried reaching Silas over and over, but every call went unanswered.
My parents lived far from Newhaven City, and his mother and father were traveling overseas at the time.
The doctor told me I needed a family member’s signature to move forward with treatment. I dialed Silas’s number dozens of times.
Not a single call got through.
I signed the surgical paperwork all on my own.
Hours after the procedure wrapped up, a text popped up on my phone from Silas.
[Out of town on a business trip.]
I checked myself out of the hospital three days later.
As I waited for the elevator, I overheard two nurses gossiping down the hall.
“Do you know the name of that handsome man staying in our VIP ward?”
The second nurse replied.
“He’s got serious clout—owner of Veridian Tech.”
“Silas Mercer.”
The first nurse sighed dreamily.
“He’s insanely good-looking. Think he’d give out his number?”
“And so devoted to his family, too. I see him pushing his dad around the hospital gardens every single day.”
The other nurse cut her off.
“He’s already got a girlfriend.”
“And that man walking with him isn’t his father—it’s his girlfriend’s dad.”
My mind went blank, my chest turning cold.
I stepped through the hospital lobby doors and caught sight of Silas Mercer.
He stood surrounded by a team of top-tier medical specialists, with his ex-girlfriend Luna Cole right at his side.
Every single doctor there was one of the most respected names in their field.
The whole group headed toward the inpatient wing together.
It hit me all at once—his so-called business trip had been nothing but a lie.
While I’d laid in the hospital recovering from my miscarriage, he’d cut off all contact to stay by his ex-girlfriend’s parents.
That same night I returned home from the hospital, I confronted Silas about spending so much time with Luna Cole.
He furrowed his brows the second I spoke.
“Were you following me?”
I bit back the flood of anger building inside me, forcing my tone steady.
“Silas Mercer, that business trip story was a lie, wasn’t it?”
“I saw you with Luna at the hospital this morning.”
“She’s your ex-girlfriend. Can’t you draw a clear line between them and your own marriage?”
Silas lifted his eyes, staring at me with unnerving calm.
“Willa, yes, she’s my ex.”
“But that doesn’t make us sworn enemies.”
He explained every detail to me in a level, unshaken voice.
“I was at the hospital with her because her father received a cancer diagnosis.”
“I truly was away for work when you called me; that’s why I couldn’t pick up.”
I didn’t lie to you.”
Over the course of that entire month, he’d been in constant contact with Luna Cole.
Late one night, I’d woken to feel him climb out of our shared bed to take a phone call.
Another evening, soft muffled sobs drifted out from his home study. I’d stepped closer and spotted his tall frame standing rigid by the desk.
He spoke gentle, soothing words into the receiver.
“I’m here.”
“Don’t be scared.”
“I’ll come see you tomorrow.”
Silas never returned to our master bedroom that night.
He left the house before the sun fully rose the next morning.
I knew without a shadow of doubt that Luna Cole had been on the other end of that line.
I said to him, my voice tight with frustration.
“Silas Mercer, you’ve been talking to her nonstop for a full month now.”
You keep stumbling home in the dead of night.
Every late hour you’re out, you’re with her.
She knows full well you’re married, so why does she keep crossing every boundary between us?”
“The two of you are acting out an affair, and she’s nothing but a homewrecker.”
Silas’s eyes darkened, sharp and icy.
“Willa Bennett.”
“She’s not a homewrecker.”
The way he rushed to defend her sent my temper spiraling out of control.
“Her father’s fighting lung cancer—can you not find it in yourself to speak with a little kindness?”
My throat burned, hot tears welling up as grief crashed over me. I’d laid alone in an ICU hospital bed to undergo a miscarriage surgery by myself.
While I’d gone through that agony, he’d catered to his ex’s parents, pulling every string he had to book the most renowned doctors for their treatment.
“Silas Mercer, all of this is just karma for her.”
The second the words left my mouth, I instantly regretted them. Silas’s face turned storm-dark, faint anger flickering across his eyes.
His tone turned frosty, cutting through the quiet room.
“Willa Bennett.”
How could you utter such hateful words?”
Silas fell silent after that, his gaze cold and distant as he looked me over.
I watched his broad back turn and walk out of the room.
That vicious fight sparked a full year of icy silence between us.
Luna Cole’s father’s cancer worsened rapidly, and they decided to fly overseas for specialized treatment.
Silas left the country alongside her.
On the day he packed his suitcases, he shot me a cold, dismissive glance, his stare flat yet razor-sharp.
In that moment, I truly believed our marriage was finished.
Neither of us said a single word to one another.
Once I heard how grave her father’s condition had grown, guilt gnawed away at my insides.
I’d sent Silas a text to apologize.
[I’m sorry for everything I said. I shouldn’t have let my temper get the better of me.]
He never sent a reply back.
