Your Lie Cost You Me Chapter 06

was about to block Jean when she sent me a message.

“Ben was the one who insisted that I wear the ring and post the photo. But I promise that once he gets his memory back, I’ll disappear and stay out of your lives for good. All I ask is that you let me keep the baby. The baby is

innocent.”

I stared at the message, wondering why she thought any of this would make a difference. The damage had already been done.

Ben couldn’t have put the ring on her finger if she hadn’t let him, and she wouldn’t be pregnant if she hadn’t slept

with him.

“Whatever is going on between you and Ben has nothing to do with me. We’re not friends anymore. Delete my number, and I’ll delete yours. Maybe then Ben will stop messaging me to accuse me of mistreating you.”

I sent the message and deleted her contact without waiting for a reply.

I let out a long breath, then focused on wrapping up the handover with my replacement.

Mom called me in a panic while I was having dinner. “Did something happen between you and Ben? I just saw the video he posted. He was proposing to another woman.”

She paused. “Isn’t that the same woman you brought home to meet us? I thought you said she and Ben were only pretending to be together.”

Her question jogged my memory. That was what I had forgotten the night before.

I quickly told Mom and Dad everything. “Jean is pregnant with Ben’s baby. He and I are over.”

I paused, then added, “He got his memory back a long time ago.”

Mom immediately put the pieces together.

“I can’t believe that friend of yours stabbed you in the back. She seemed so sweet. At least now you’ve seen both of them for who they really are. I’m so mad. I’m deleting them both right now.”

I gave a quiet hum, then added, “I’m leaving tomorrow to work at the company’s branch in Velmora. I’ve already hired a real estate agent to sell the house in Vareston.”

Mom hesitated, clearly reluctant to part with the house. “We bought it for you to live in after you got married, but it belongs to you, so the decision is yours. Still, it’s only a breakup. Do you really need to move so far away?”

I let out a rueful laugh. “I’m not moving because of Ben. The job overseas pays better and is less stressful.”

Mom didn’t press the issue. She simply told me to do what I thought was best.

After packing what little I had left, I called Ian. “I’m leaving the country tomorrow, so I’ll need you to take care of the sale.”

I was paying him a generous commission, and he was quick to reassure me.

“Don’t worry, Noelle. The house is in a great location, and it still looks brand-new inside. Someone already asked about it today, and I’ll show it to them tomorrow.”

I still had one concern, so I reminded him, “There are people staying there right now, but we never signed a lease, and they haven’t paid me a cent in rent. They aren’t tenants.

“Once the buyer is ready to move in, you can put their belongings outside.”

Barly the next morning, I took my suitcase to the airport and met up with my colleagues.

Meanwhile, all hell had already broken loose back at the house.
