He Never Knew I Was Carrying His Child Chapter 10

He Never Knew I Was Carrying His Child Chapter 10

Years ago, after his dinner, Damian would’ve simply disappeared.

Hours later, I’d finally ask,

Everything okay?

His answer was always the same.

Yeah.

Never once, did he think to tell me he’d finished or ask how my evening had been.

If I asked why, he’d sigh. “Don’t you have anything else to do besides waiting for my texts?”

I’d long since grown out of caring whether someone replied within minutes.

And yet, reading Liam’s explanation made something warm settle quietly inside my chest.

I typed back.

No worries.

Finish what you’re doing first.

Almost immediately, the words at the top of the screen changed into typing…

A long message appeared.

No one is too busy to let someone they care about know they’re thinking of them.

It only takes a few seconds to say, “I’ll be tied up for a while.”

Or, “I’ll call you later.”

The people who matter deserve that much.

I hope one day, You’ll let me be that person for you.

I stared at the screen. But I didn’t answer.

In the afternoon, I left work early.

Mostly because I wasn’t ready to face Liam after reading that message.

Instead, I found Damian waiting outside the building.

A bouquet of white roses rested in his arms. Snow drifted lazily beneath the streetlights.

“I want to prove I can change.” His breath formed little clouds in the cold air.

“Everything you used to do for me, let me do it now.”

“I’ll be the one who checks in. The one who calls. The one who sends the first message.”

I looked at him quietly. “You couldn’t do those things when we lived under the same roof. What makes you think distance will make it easier?”

Something flickered across his face.

“It won’t be long–distance. I resigned. I’ll find work here. Just give me a chance. We can start over.”

I shook my head. “I already start over.”

He frowned. “What do you mean?”

I hesitated. “I’ve met someone.”

He stared at me. “I don’t believe that. Not this soon. I do.”

The voice came from behind me.

I turned. Liam walked over as though he’d been there the whole time.

Without a word, he took the flowers from Damian’s hands.

Looked down at them. Then back up. “Nice flowers. You can leave now.”

Damian didn’t move.

For several long seconds, he simply stood there.

Finally, he gave a small, defeated smile.

“So, I really am too late.”

Neither of us answered. Liam reached for my hand. Our fingers intertwined naturally.

We walked away together. Leaving Damian alone beneath the falling snow.

A snowflake landed on my eyelashes. The cold made me blink.

And suddenly, a memory surfaced.

Another snowy afternoon. Years ago.

Liam had looked at me with the same amused expression and said,

“You really don’t remember me, do you?”

I stopped walking.

Slowly, I turned toward him.

“Were you the boy from Hyde Park?”

The corners of his mouth lifted. “There you are. I was beginning to think you’d never remember.”

I laughed. “When we were kids, my friends were playing pretend.”
