He Never Knew I Was Carrying His Child Chapter 05

He Never Knew I Was Carrying His Child Chapter 05

My first week in London didn’t go the way I’d imagined.

My onboarding paperwork had somehow disappeared. My security badge never arrived. My system access was delayed for days.

By the time everything was sorted out, I’d already been assigned the department’s least desirable account. An impossible deadline. An impossible target.

It didn’t take long before I figured out why. Officially, the team was led by the founder’s son. Young. Brilliant. And rarely in the office.

The day–to–day decisions were made by the regional director instead.

The two of them disagreed on almost everything.

Without realizing it, I’d become collateral damage.

Once again, my approval request was stuck waiting on another department.

No reply. No explanation. Frustrated, I opened the pinned conversation at the top of my messages.

Before I could stop myself, I sent a crying cat emoji.

I was about to complain to Ava. Instead, the reply came almost instantly.

I’m here.

What’s wrong?

I frowned. That wasn’t how Ava usually replied.

Then I looked at the name. My stomach dropped.

I’d sent it to the wrong person.

Not Ava.

But my boss, Liam Carter. The founder’s son.

I’d heard plenty of stories about Liam. Apparently, He had the face of a movie star…

And the patience of a lit match.

One manager proudly joked during dinner that he was secretly dating two women at once.

Liam looked at him and said, “You’re proud of lying to two women?”

The room went silent.

One of the senior executives launched into another speech about “embracing your authentic self.”

Liam cut him off halfway. “Maybe try being a decent person first.”

No wonder half the company was terrified of him.

I stared at my phone. No chance to unsend the message.

Three dots appeared. Then another text.

Stay where you are.

I am totally confused. What?

Three hours later, the man who was supposed to be in Edinburgh walked into the conference room.

A carry–on suitcase rolled behind him.

His dark overcoat was still dusted with melting snow. He looked straight at me.

“What happened?”

The rumors hadn’t exaggerated.

Liam really was ridiculously handsome. The kind of face that made people forgive impossible deadlines.

But unlike the stories, his voice was calm.

After I explained that I’d sent the message to him by accident, the corner of his mouth lifted slightly.

“So payroll never accidentally deposits your salary into my account, but somehow your texts do?”

I sighed. “Fair enough.” Taking advantage of his surprisingly good mood, I mentioned the approval that had been stuck for days.

He made one phone call.

Less than five minutes later, everything was approved.

I let out a long breath. “Thank you, Mr. Carter.”

He looked at me for a moment. Then smiled faintly. “Elena, I guess you’ve really forgotten me.”

On my way home, I kept searching my memory.

Had we met before? Nothing.

My phone vibrated. Damian.

I stared at his name for a long moment before answering.

The second the call connected, his voice came through.

“Elena.” There was no anger in his tone. Only something I had never heard from him before. Panic.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I stayed silent. His breathing became uneven.

“I know about the baby.” My fingers tightened around the phone.

“I know you went to London.” A pause.

“I know you left.” The words landed heavier than I expected.

“Damian…”

“I spent the entire morning trying to find you.” His voice dropped.

“I called the hospital. I checked your schedule. I went home and saw your closet…”

He stopped. Like even saying it hurt.

“Half of your things were gone. You packed it away without letting me know.”
