“There’s absolutely nothing going on between Xavier and me, Caleb. You can ask him yourself if you don’t believe me!” Faye insisted as she passed me her phone, though I didn’t reach for it.
“I’m well aware of that. Xavier already made things official with a new girlfriend-word is she’s some wealthy businesswoman from Sundermere. He won’t ever have to worry about a career now. He’s set for life.
“You must be devastated, Faye; otherwise, you wouldn’t have traveled all this way to Borrengate just to find me.
”
Faye’s hand froze midair, her teeth sinking into her lip. “It’s not like that, Caleb. I came to find you because I didn’t want you to misunderstand the whole situation. I care about you, I love you, and I can’t let you leave me over something so minor, Caleb.”
I couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “You love me, but you deliberately covered up our relationship and stayed in a room with another guy.”
“Why do you have to keep fixating on this? It’s not like we did anything-”
“You think I’m not allowed to be upset just because nothing happened, huh? Why did you tell me to look for Richard to swap with others instead of letting me stay with Ruth during the trip, then?”
Faye paled slightly. She no longer spoke with confidence as she stammered. “T-That’s different-”
She suddenly whipped around to glare at Ruth before even finishing her sentence. She then snapped, “What about her, then? She’s been pining after you during all four years of university. She’s clearly manipulative and messed up in the head. How could you choose to be with someone like her, Caleb?”
I didn’t want Ruth to get yelled at, so I countered Faye with a scowl. “You’ve been eyeing Xavier for four years, and you’re still obsessed with him even though you clearly have a boyfriend, Faye. You’re the one who’s messed up in the head!”
“I-”
“That’s enough. Caleb is exhausted and needs to get some rest,” Ruth interrupted coldly, putting an end to our bickering.
“I knew from the very beginning that you two were dating, Faye. I initially thought that if you were happy together, then there was nothing wrong with me giving up. However, I personally saw Richard rig the draw and watched you choose to room with Xavier a few days ago.
“I knew right then that it was my time to make a move. I took my shot and came out on top, while you walked away from a future with him. You’re the loser here, so please stay out of his life from now on, Faye.”
Ruth led me away, while Faye rushed forward to grab me.
I stepped aside to avoid her completely, though. I suddenly recalled something as Ruth and I were waiting for the elevator. “Oh, by the way, Faye-since I turned down that position in Sundermere, your job offer fell through as well.
“You should probably get back and start hunting for a new position immediately; after all, the rent in that area is sky-high, and without me splitting the place with you, you won’t be able to carry it on your own.”
Faye’s deathly pale face became the last memory I ever had of her as the elevator doors slid shut.
Ruth, who was standing beside me, gave my hand a reassuring squeeze. She and I had only been dating for two or three days, even though we had known each other for seven years.
She looked straight into my eyes despite that and stated solemnly, “You can rest assured that I’m different from her, Caleb. I truly love you, which means I won’t give up on you or leave you. I’ll watch the Perseid meteor shower with you next year, Caleb.”
I simply smiled, leaned over, and kissed her lips. “Alright, Ruth.”
I finally found a partner whose entire world revolved around me as the years drifted by.
