The Price of Their Fortune Chapter 06
I leaned against the hospital pillows and stared at the gray sky beyond the window.
The memory of Travis breaking my ribs and my parents beating me to death remained painfully vivid, yet the truth behind it was almost laughably stupid.
A fierce will to survive rose inside me.
I wouldn’t wait helplessly for death this time.
Anyone who wanted a sacrifice could volunteer themselves
I’d turn their precious legend against the people who wanted me dead.
The rumor might have been invented from nothing, but the three children were real.
Real children had histories, records, and people who had known them.
My eyes returned to the DNA report. Where were their biological parents?
Had the boys been abandoned, or had they been trafficked?
A plan took shape at once.
I picked up my phone.
“Aaron, I need help. I believe three trafficked children are being kept at my apartment. Contact someone at the Cedar Hollow Police Department and a reputable child–recovery organization as quickly as you can.
“I also need you to help me stage something.”
After arranging everything, I drew a deep breath and called Delia.
“Delia, I’ve thought it over.”
There was a pause before she answered in an unnaturally gentle voice. “Nathan? You really changed your mind?”
“I’ve spent hours thinking in the hospital. Maybe everyone’s right. Maybe I forgot something, and the boys really are mine…
“My head hurts, and parts of my memory feel missing.”
I copied the confused tone of an amnesia patient from television, mixing enough truth into the lie to make it convincing
Delia couldn’t hide her excitement. “You can’t remember, but you’re willing to accept them?”
“Yes,” I said quietly. “Let’s put this behind us and be a family. Bring the boys to the hospital and take me home.”
“Yes. We’re coming right now.” She ended the call before I could say more.
I knew she’d bring every member of her little alliance.
Greed had swallowed their judgment, and they were desperate to complete the act of recognition.
I immediately sent one message “They took the bait. Proced.”
Half an hour later, the hospital door opened
Delia entered with the three boys. My parents and Travis followed, barely concealing their excitement.
“Nathan, you finally understand. Boys, call him Dad.”
