They Tried to Break My Sister. Then I Woke Up Chapter 03
Gavin stared darkly at my swollen belly.
“You’re signing that agreement today, even if you die doing it.”
He lifted his chin, his tone openly threatening.
“You attacked a Pack Elder in front of witnesses. Under Blackridge Pack Law, the Council has the right to strip you of the right to carry this pup to term and order the pregnancy terminated!”
I watched the dozen or so Pack Warriors closing in and grabbed a shard from the shattered teacup on the table.
I pressed the sharp edge to the side of my neck, directly over the artery.
“Come on.”
I stared at Gavin without a hint of backing down.
“One more step, and I’ll die right here.”
“And it won’t just be me. It’ll be the five-month-old female pup inside me too.”
I laughed coldly.
“I’d love to see how the entire Blackridge Pack plans to explain to the Western Federation police and courts how a group of Pack Elders and Warriors drove a woman who was five months pregnant to her death.”
The Blackwell men who had been moving toward me immediately stopped.
They were willing to back Gavin up and use their so-called Pack Law to intimidate me.
But if two lives were actually lost, none of them wanted to risk a murder charge for the Blackwell family.
“You’re insane… You’re completely insane!”
Malcolm’s face went red with rage, and the hand gripping his cane trembled.
I kept the glass pressed to my neck and held my other hand out toward Gavin.
“Give me my sister’s…”
I paused and forced myself to correct it.
“Give me the documents for my premarital account, my bank cards, and all my banking records.”
Gavin clenched his jaw and didn’t move.
I pressed the shard a little deeper into my skin.
Blood immediately ran down the side of my neck.
Gavin stared at the thin trail of red, his Adam’s apple shifting.
In the end, he gritted his teeth, pulled my bank cards and account documents from his pocket, and threw them onto the table.
I grabbed them, kicked a chair out of my way, and walked out of the Pack House alone.
I called a rideshare from the curb and went straight to the city’s werewolf medical center.
Right now, keeping the pup alive came first.
The moment I arrived, I went straight to the ER.
After the examination, I took my prescriptions and bill to the billing desk.
My card was declined twice.
The staff member handed it back to me.
“I’m sorry, ma’am. Your card was declined.”
I froze.
Then I pulled out my phone, logged into online banking, and opened the full transaction history.
The farther I scrolled, the tighter my fingers curled around the phone.
The money I’d saved for Audrey before she became Gavin’s mate, along with the wages she’d put away little by little over the years, had started disappearing in batches six months ago.
Every transfer had been initiated by Gavin.
And all of it had ended up in the same account.
Paige Holloway.
I gripped my phone so tightly that my knuckles turned white.
Just then, Dr. Nathan Keller hurried over from the ER with my lab results in hand.
“Audrey, the signs that you may lose the pup aren’t just from exposure to the cold or physical exhaustion.”
He looked down at the report, his expression darkening.
“We found an abnormally high concentration of wolfsbane in your blood, along with a powerful drug that induces uterine contractions and is strictly banned during pregnancy in werewolf medicine.”
“Levels this high couldn’t come from a single accidental dose.”
Dr. Keller looked up, his voice turning serious.
“Someone has been drugging you for at least several months. The wolfsbane has been suppressing your natural werewolf healing, while the other drug has been repeatedly triggering uterine contractions.”
“If this keeps happening, you won’t just lose the pup. Your own life could be at risk.”
He pulled out his phone.
“This isn’t an ordinary domestic dispute anymore. I need to call the police.”
Almost the second he said “several months,” memories that didn’t belong to me surged through my mind.
Every night, Diane had personally brought Audrey a bowl of dark brown Pack prenatal tonic.
She always stood there and watched until Audrey drank every last drop.
And every time, she told her the same thing.
“This is a Blackwell prenatal tonic made especially for pregnant she-wolves. It’s good for you and the pup.”
Now I finally knew what had really been hidden in those bowls of so-called prenatal tonic.
Deep inside my mind, Audrey let out a muffled, agonized whimper.
So they hadn’t just drained my accounts.
They’d never intended to let the female pup inside me survive either.
“Dr. Keller, wait.”
I put my hand over his phone.
“Don’t call the police yet.”
Dr. Keller paused.
“Audrey, they’ve been poisoning you for months. If this continues, both you and the pup could die!”
“The lab results prove I’ve been exposed to wolfsbane and a prohibited drug over a long period of time. They don’t prove who gave them to me.”
I stared at the report, my voice cold.
“If I call the police now, the most they’ll do is bring them in for questioning. And even if I sue over the stolen assets, all that does is force Gavin to give back what he took.”
“That’s too easy.”
A slow smile curved across my lips.
“Give me the lab report.”
I looked up, the faces of everyone in the Blackridge Pack flashing through my mind.
“When I settle a score, I don’t call it even just because someone gives back what they stole.”
“What they owe Audrey, what they owe this pup…”
I tightened my grip on the report.
“The Blackwells are going to pay it all back. Every last bit.”
I had barely turned around when I saw Gavin standing there in a clean change of clothes.
One arm was around Paige.
In his other hand was a new prenatal ultrasound report.
The second Paige saw me, she deliberately pushed her barely visible belly forward and smiled sweetly.
“Audrey, you left so fast earlier that I didn’t get the chance to tell you something.”
She stroked her belly.
“I’m carrying a boy. I’m already four months along.”
“The doctor says he’s going to be a very healthy male pup.”
Open satisfaction spread across Gavin’s face.
Everyone in the room knew exactly what a male pup meant to an old-line Pack like Blackridge, where the Alpha title still passed only to male heirs.
Gavin pulled a freshly reprinted Mate Severance and Property Settlement from the folder in his hand and held it out to me.
“Audrey, consider that money room and board for all the years you’ve spent living under the Blackwell roof and eating Blackwell food.”
“Sign the agreement and stop making this difficult.”
He tightened his arm around Paige’s waist.
“The marital home stays with Paige so she can live there through her pregnancy. As for the female pup you’re carrying, I’ll pay to have the pregnancy terminated.”
I stared at him without saying a word.
Gavin continued.
“Tomorrow morning at ten. Founders’ Hall.”
“We’ll settle the mate severance and property division once and for all in front of the Pack Council and every Blackwell Elder.”
Then he stepped closer and lowered his voice so only the two of us could hear.
“You’d better show up on time.”
“I have every medical record from the past few years documenting your depression, your emotional outbursts, and all those episodes where you supposedly ‘couldn’t control your wolf.'”
A cold smile tugged at his mouth.
“I’ve already contacted a psychiatric facility.”
“If you don’t show up, I’ll make sure all of Blackridge knows you weren’t mistreated.”
“You’re just a dangerous she-wolf who could go feral at any moment.”
“And when that happens, they’ll lock you away.”
I looked at the two of them, then bent down and picked up the Mate Severance and Property Settlement.
“Fine.”
I slowly brushed the dust from the pages as my smile widened.
“Tomorrow morning at ten. Founders’ Hall.”
I looked up at Gavin and Paige.
“And this time, we’ll do it in front of the entire Pack Council.”
“We’ll settle every single ‘debt’ between us.”
