Resign with Grace, Return with Fire Chapter 20
Sandra looked utterly disappointed as she fixed her gaze on me. “Fred, when did you become so scheming and shameless? You’re using every dirty trick in the book!”
The moment their own interests were affected, everyone couldn’t sit still and started protesting.
“Yeah, this isn’t fair to us!”
“This is a total fix-pure manipulation! If the result is already predetermined, why hold a bid meeting in the first place? Are we a joke to you?”
I looked icily at Sandra and Lester, enunciating each word as I said, “I won the bid based on my abilities. My conscience is clear. And the reason that you didn’t win is simple enough. Who would partner with a company that’s already blown up?”
Sandra frowned. “What do you mean?”
I curled my lips into a cold smile. “I mean that you’re finished.”
With that, I pulled out my phone and pointed at the latest headline. “Haven’t you heard yet? Your company is all over the front page because Lester faked the finances!”
“What? He falsified the accounts?” Sandra froze for a moment. Then, she rushed forward and grabbed my phone.
After reading the article, her face visibly darkened as her fingertips turned white from how tightly she clenched my phone. She handed it back to me and turned to pin Lester with an icy stare. “What is going on here, Lester?”
A flicker of diffidence flashed in Lester’s eyes, but he quickly steadied himself and stuck to his story. “I don’t know anything about this, Sandy.”
His eyes reddened as he spoke, and he turned to give me a wounded look. “I don’t know what I’ve done to offend you so badly that you’d do this to me, Fred. You even bought a fake headline to slander me just so you could ruin
me…”
Hearing that, Sandra immediately shot me a death glare. “How dare you spread rumors to smear Lester’s reputation just because you’re jealous of him, Fred! You never cease to amaze me in the worst ways!”
Once again, the two of them were singing in chorus as they tried to turn this on me. This time, I wasn’t going to let them get their way.
I let out a cold laugh and decisively forwarded the soft copies of all the evidence I’d gathered to Sandra. “Look carefully at what I’ve just sent you, Sandra. This is what Lester is really like.
“Your company never made a real comeback. He’s just been faking the numbers to fool people. And the money used to fill the hole was from him taking out online loans under your name.”
Sandra’s eyes widened in shock, and her fingers trembled.
Public opinion flipped at my words. Everyone was now looking at Sandra with open disdain.
“So, this is the truth behind the so-called industry legend. They’re total fakes!”
“A company this unscrupulous should just go bankrupt!”
Sandra’s face flushed all the way down to her neck from the crowd’s pointing and whispering.
“Lester, look at what you’ve-”
She turned, ready to confront Lester, but all she found was empty space behind her. It seemed that Lester knew that things had gone horribly wrong and had already bolted.
As such, Sandra had no choice but to leave with her tail between her legs.
After that day, Sandra’s company collapsed and declared bankruptcy due to overwhelming debt. She was so enraged that she and Lester had a huge fight, even turning to blows.
She usually couldn’t even bear speaking harshly to Lester, yet she slapped him hard across the face for the first time ever.
Lester clutched his cheek, his eyes red as he tried to play the victim. “Sandy, I—”
But Sandra’s patience had long since run out. She had him thrown out of the office on the spot. She shouted, “I don’t want to see you ever again! Stay as far away from me as possible from now on!”
