Where the Past Ends Chapter 08
The internet detonated when the voice message went up.
Derek’s supporters still wouldn’t take it.
“Audio can be synthesized.”
“Elliot will manufacture anything to save his own reputation.”
Booth released the authenticated record and the examiner’s summary right behind it.
The date, the originating number, and the content of every message my grandmother received were laid out line by line.
Ruth Harlan recorded a statement too.
“I’m the one who drove Eleanor to the hospital that day.
“Before she passed out, somebody was sending her message after message, tearing her grandson apart.
“Eli was already on a train, hours out of the county. He had no idea any of it was happening.”
The hospital admission times and the rail records matched her account exactly.
That day, I was still trying to get to Mossfield.
The claim that I’d sent her the videos myself was flatly impossible.
Then the platform published the results of its own review.
The conversation images Derek posted had been altered.
My profile photo had been pasted in afterward.
The text had been assembled off an unrelated message template.
The original conversation he claimed to have had never existed on the platform at all.
Public opinion flipped completely.
“So Derek’s the one who harassed the grandmother before she died?”
“He broke up somebody else’s relationship and then played the victim?”
“And Naomi handed him the woman’s surgery money to spend?”
People followed the bank records straight to the luxury watch.
Most of the fifty thousand dollars Derek said was for his sister’s tuition went to a luxury retailer.
He used what was left to reserve the engagement venue.
Naomi finally called me.
This time her voice was shaking.
“Eli, are the records online real?”
I asked her, “Weren’t you the one who never believed a word I said?”
“I asked Derek.”
She drew a rough breath.
“He says none of those numbers are his.
“But I recognized one of them.
“He used it to contact me before.”
I said nothing.
Her voice went hoarse.
“Did his messages really put her in that hospital?”
“Yes.”
“And he didn’t use the fifty thousand for his sister’s tuition?”
“No.”
A stifled sob came down the line.
“Eli, I didn’t know.
“If I’d known, I never would have moved that money.
“I never would have left you alone at that hospital either.”
I listened without feeling anything.
“But you did both.”
“I’m sorry.”
She apologized over and over.
“I’m coming to find you.
“I’ll go to her grave and get on my knees.
“Can we start over?”
I ended the call without answering.
That evening, Port Aurell investigators executed a warrant at Derek’s apartment, seized his devices, and took him in for questioning.
He shouted from the doorway, “I didn’t hurt anybody.
“Elliot forced me into all of it
“Naomi Naomi, help me.
Naomi stood at the back of the crowd and didn’t move.
The criminal and civil cases went forward in open court.
Forensic witnesses authenticated the records, the devices, the account data, and the preserved platform
Information.
The court found that Derek’s conversation screenshots were fabricated.
He had repeatedly sent targeted messages and videos to an elderly woman with known heart disease, and had published false claims about my conduct.
He had also impersonated me to manufacture a false record.
The judgments required public corrections and apologies, damages, platform restrictions, and the criminal consequences the charges carried,
The original post came down.
The platform permanently disabled his accounts under its own enforcement rules,
The same people who’d praised his kindness crowded under the old reposts to tear him apart.
“He played innocent perfectly.”
“Spent a dying woman’s surgery money and still called himself unlucky.”
“He was the cruel one the whole time.”
Bellwarren State University issued a formal statement.
Dr. Reese called me.
“Elliot, I didn’t have the facts before.
“Derek fooled me too.
“Would you consider taking my name off the civil complaint?”
I asked, “Didn’t you go on camera and tell the public there was something wrong with my character?”
He hurried to explain.
“That was a misunderstanding,
“You were always one of the students I valued most.”
I laughed once.
“I don’t value you.”
I ended the call and blocked his number.
Owen and Kevin sent pages of apologies too.
“Elliot, we were victims here as well.
“Derek fooled everybody. We trusted the wrong guy.
“We spent four years together. Don’t hold this against us.”
I sent them both the same reply.
“You didn’t just trust the wrong guy.
“You were used to going after whoever had nobody standing behind him.
“I’ve read the apologies,
“I don’t accept them.”
