I opened the class group chat again. There were over 999 unread messages. Every single one was cursing Pearl.
It started with simple accusations but gradually turned into vicious, cruel insults. The messages kept shooting upward at an alarming speed, almost without pause.
Pearl never replied to a single one.
I left the group chat. My phone finally became silent. I did not want to hear anything about anyone from that class ever again.
Still, I never expected Landon and his parents to show up at my door. He stood there with his head lowered. Several fresh fingerprints were visible on his cheek. He looked exhausted. It was as though he had not slept properly in days.
“Vivian, Landon’s the one who wronged you. I’ll get justice for you.”
His father kicked Landon hard enough to send him stumbling backward.
“This kid didn’t know any better. We’ve already taught him a harsh lesson!”
His mother rubbed her hands together, forcing an exaggerated smile onto her face. “Speaking of which, you two studied together and worked toward the same goal throughout high school. I considered you my future daughter -in-law long ago!”
I did not say anything. The smile on my face remained polite yet distant.
Her smile froze for a moment. After a brief silence, she said awkwardly, “Vivian, I heard that the university gave you another spot and they could lower the admission requirements…”
That was why they came.
“Vivian, think about it. Landon was always capable of getting into the university. This whole thing happened because of Pearl. If it weren’t for her, Landon would have performed normally and getting accepted wouldn’t have been a problem!”
Her words came faster and faster. She seemed like she desperately wanted to finish what she came to say.
“You two have been together for such a long time. If you both go to the same university, you won’t have to be separated. Landon can take care of you too. Wouldn’t that be perfect for both of you?”
I lowered my head and let out a quiet scoff.
“If he were still the person from a year ago, then yes, he really would have been capable of it.
“But during senior year, he spent all his time making Pearl happy and wasted too much of his study time. He even forgot most of the basic formulas from freshman year. Even if not for this incident, the best he could have done was probably get into an ordinary top-tier university!”
Landon’s shoulders trembled.
“And one more thing…” I looked calmly at his mother. “He’s my ex-boyfriend. We’ve broken up. On the school rooftop, he personally destroyed everything we had…”
It was as though someone had driven a knife straight through Landon’s back. His entire body jolted. He suddenly turned around and pushed his parents toward the door. His movements were frantic and harsh. Leave. Both of you, leave!”
“What are you doing? We’re doing this for your own good!”
His parents stumbled as he pushed them outside. Still holding onto the doorframe, his mother called out to me.
“Vivian, please think about it. Just tell me what you want. I’ll definitely make it happen…”
“Leave!” Landon shoved them out and slammed the door shut. The impact was so hard that dust fell from the
walls.
Then, it was as though all his strength had left him. He slid down onto the floor. His chest rose and fell violently. His voice was unbearably hoarse. “I’m sorry…”
I stayed silent for a long time before finally saying, “I don’t care anymore. Everything that happened is already in the past. I’m about to go to university. A new class with new classmates. A new life. To me, you’ve already become a page I’ve turned.”
He covered his face. His voice came out muffled through his fingers. “I understand… Vivian, I’ve decided to repeat my senior year. I’ll definitely get into a university in your city next year…”
He lifted his head. His swollen eyes were frighteningly bright.
I turned my face away. “Then I wish you the best, but I hope we never meet again…”
The light in his eyes instantly disappeared. He lowered his head again. A sound like a wounded animal’s whimper escaped from him. After a long while, he stood back up. His expression had calmed considerably.
Before leaving, he hesitated for a moment before he said, “By the way, only a small portion of the class decided to repeat senior year. The others decided to follow Pearl and work for a major tech company.”
I suddenly gripped the doorknob tightly. “What did you say?”
