Everything Cecilia wore and used had been bought with her own money, spent straight out of the savings she had accumulated before ever entering Benton Corp.
And Marcus hadn’t even noticed that she wasn’t earning a single cent.
Bianca suddenly pushed open the conference room door and walked in. “Marcus, aren’t you done yet? I brought you-”
When she noticed the tense expressions in the room, her footsteps faltered. “What’s going on?”
Marcus stared at her.
Bianca blinked, returning his gaze with an innocent look.
“Bianca.” Marcus spoke up. “Did you tell HR back then that Cecilia didn’t need to be paid?”
Bianca froze for a brief second before quickly breaking into a smile. “Oh, you mean that? I was just making a casual comment back then. Besides, Cecilia never brought it up with you either, did she? If she doesn’t even care, why are you making such a big deal out of it?”
“She never mentioned being out of money to me,” Marcus said.
“That’s because you provided more than enough for her. You bought her all her clothes, bags, and skincare products.”
Bianca walked over and took a seat right beside him. “Marcus, don’t let people with hidden agendas take advantage of you. Cecilia is clearly throwing a tantrum right now and trying to force you to soothe her.
“If you actually give in, she’ll go missing every single time she feels unhappy in the future. You won’t be able to stand that.”
Marcus remained silent.
Bianca pressed on, “Besides, think about it. If she truly cared that much about money, she would have told you long ago. The fact that she didn’t just proves she didn’t need it at all. Who knows? Maybe she has plenty of her own savings stashed away.”
Marcus’ mind was an absolute mess. Every word Bianca fed him shoved the guilt in his chest down a little deeper.
He sat back down and opened the documents on the desk.
Noticing that he was no longer pressing the issue, Bianca quietly let out a sigh of relief.
That night, Marcus returned home.
When he pushed the door open, he was met with total chaos in the living room.
The couch cushions were tossed onto the floor, magazines lay scattered across the coffee table, and every single drawer of the TV stand was pulled wide open, its contents rummaged through.
The study door was half-ajar, revealing an even worse mess inside, with files, books, and odds and ends strewn across the desk and floor.
As Marcus stood in the foyer, his heart skipped a beat.
He rushed into the bedroom in a few quick strides. The closet doors were thrown wide open, and all the clothes on Cecilia’s side were gone.
The drawers were empty. Her skincare and cosmetics were completely missing from the vanity.
In a single night, every last trace of Cecilia in the house had been wiped clean.
Standing in the half-emptied room, Marcus felt a heavy blow strike his chest.
Bianca ran in right behind him. Taking in the scene, she deliberately said, “Look at this mess, Marcus. She totally did this on purpose. Don’t you know what Cecilia is like? She hates clutter more than anything and always keeps the place spotless.
“If she truly wanted to leave, she would’ve packed her things quietly and walked away. Leaving the house irysuch a wreck is obviously just a show to make you panic so you’ll go looking for her first.”
Marcus stood amid the mess, listening to Bianca’s words as his fingers tightened around the doorframe.
He wanted to argue that Cecilia was not that kind of person.
Yet for some reason, he remained silent, swallowing back the words “she wouldn’t do this”.
“Marcus, don’t worry about it. I’ll help you clean up.” Bianca rolled up her sleeves and began picking things up off the floor.
Marcus didn’t move.
As he stared at the empty closet, a wire inside his chest pulled tighter and tighter.
The following day, Benton Corp’s official website and social media accounts issued a joint announcement.
“The engagement between Mr. Marcus Benton and Ms. Cecilia Caruso has been officially terminated as of today. Consider this notice served.”
