My Last Shot After Seven Canceled Weddings Chapter 04
Mird-Person POV
Marcus stared at the cold gray tick beside his message, frozen for a long moment.
Bianca was still sleeping in the hospital bed, her breathing steady. There was even a faint smile playing on her lips. Marcus sat on the chair beside the bed, his back rigid and straight.
He tried calling again, but the same busy tone greeted him.
He sent a message on WhatsApp, only for it to remain stuck on a single tick.
After exiting the chat, he scrolled through his contacts for Cecilia’s name, tapped it, and called again.
It was still the same busy tone.
The phone burned in his grip. Marcus suddenly stood up, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a harsh, grating screech.
Bianca frowned and rolled over but didn’t wake.
As he hurried out of the ward, a scene from this afternoon suddenly flashed through his mind.
Cecilia had fallen to the ground, her elbow taking the force of the blow. He had been in such a rush to carry Bianca away that he hadn’t even spared her a backward glance.
Had her face been pale?
The knot in Marcus’ chest pulled tighter and tighter.
In their five years together, Cecilia had never been one to make a scene. Even when he postponed their wedding three times because of Bianca, she had done nothing more than look at him in silence before quietly saying, “Okay. “He was so used to her giving in that he felt as though she would never truly leave.
So when she showed up in Solaviera, his first reaction was that she had stalked him.
Yet Cecilia actually said she just happened to have some business here.
When she said those words, her gaze was completely flat. She didn’t look angry, nor did she look upset.
That detachment felt deeply unfamiliar to him.
Suddenly, it felt as though a piece of his heart had gone hollow.
Marcus turned back and pushed open the ward door.
Bianca was already awake, sitting up in bed and scrolling through her phone. Spotting him, she immediately offered a smile. “You’re back, Marcus. I thought I heard something earlier. Were you not able to get in touch with Cecilia?”
Marcus forced his lips into a tight line. “She blocked me.”
“How could she do that?”
Bianca lowered her head. Her voice was barely above a whisper, as if she were talking to herself. “I know she’s mad at me. The wedding she prepared for five years got postponed again because of me, so she’s bound to feel resentful. Marcus, put yourself in her shoes. If I were her, I’d be angry too. But…”
When she raised her face, tears trickled down her cheeks. “She chased you all the way to Solaviera to throw a ntrum, played the victim by pretending to fall in front of you, and ignored your texts and blocked you….
“She’s doing it to make you feel guilty and manipulate you. If you give in and try to appease her this time, she’ll use the same trick every time. Your compromise will only become a weapon for her in the future.”
Marcus remained silent for a long time.
Bianca’s words were like a needle, striking a precise nerve in the corner of his mind. He knew he was starting to regret it, but the word “manipulate” instinctively put his defenses up.
For five years, Cecilia had never manipulated him. But what if… this was the first time?
“Marcus.” Bianca reached out and tugged at his sleeve. “Didn’t we agree this trip would just be the two of us? You, said you’d stay by my side through this tough patch. You promised me.”i
Looking at the tear tracks on Bianca’s face, Marcus finally let out a sigh. “Don’t cry. I won’t bring it up anymore.” Bianca’s tears turned into a smile as she leaned back against the pillow, her eyes crinkling. “Then it’s a deal. For the next few days, you’re only spending time with me. No thinking about anyone else.”
Marcus nodded, but as he did, the image of Cecilia falling to the ground flashed across his mind yet again.
Over the next few days, Marcus really didn’t try to contact Cecilia.
He accompanied Bianca to the beach and snapped pictures of their silhouettes against the setting sun.
Then they visited the Wildhaven Wetlands and took an airboat ride to see the alligators.
They even dined on fresh seafood at Coralwyn’s Sunset Pier, where Bianca fed him peeled shrimp.
Every single post Bianca uploaded to Facebook came with a sweet caption, drawing comments like “So sweet”,” Marcus spoils you so much”, and “When’s the wedding?”
But looking at those comments, Marcus couldn’t quite name the bitter taste lingering in his chest.
He found himself instinctively ordering two drinks whenever he grabbed coffee-an iced black coffee and a low- sugar latte. Only then would he remember Cecilia wasn’t there and that the latte was her usual order.
He would stand on the hotel balcony overlooking the ocean, hold up his phone to capture the night view, and hit send, only to remember she had already blocked him.
When the single tick appeared, he stood there staring at his phone for a long, quiet moment.
On the fourth night, he received a phone call from his assistant, Dante Corvelli.
“Mr. Benton, we have a problem.” Dante’s voice was tight with tension. “Our biggest client, Ceciora Capital, sent over a contract termination letter this afternoon.”
