He Married His Enemy’s Daughter, So I Left the Mafia Family Chapter 09

He had really found me.

I didn’t hesitate for even a second.

The team leader ordered a rescue maneuver, and I moved with the team.

Within minutes, we dragged the private security team that had absolutely no business being there out of the line of fire.

By the time the fighting ended, Adrian was slumped on the ground beside the SUV.

He was covered in dust, his jacket was torn, and there were cuts across his face.

Hearing footsteps, he looked up.

The moment he saw me remove my face covering, he froze.

For several seconds, he couldn’t react.

“Natalie…”

He practically hauled himself to his feet.

But after taking one step toward me, he stopped.

His gaze dropped to my stomach.

There was no longer any sign of the pregnancy.

Adrian’s lips moved several times before he finally managed to speak.

“The baby… our baby. What happened?”

“I lost the baby.”

My voice was calm.

His eyes turned red instantly.

“I’m sorry. Natalie, I’m so sorry.”

He reached for me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

Adrian froze where he stood and didn’t come any closer.

“I was wrong. I didn’t know you were pregnant. I should never have locked you in there. And all those years, I should never have…”

His voice shook.

“Come back with me. Hit me, scream at me, whatever you want. Just tell me how to make this right.

I’ll do anything.”

I looked at him.

“Adrian, you still don’t get it. I didn’t leave so you could chase after me and make things right. You betrayed Daniel and threw away everything we fought for, all for a Rossi. You stood there while the whole Family humiliated me because of my name, and you never once stood up for me. You cared so much about blood and status. Did it never occur to you that the person who stepped into the line of fire for you more than anyone else didn’t have a drop of Moretti blood?”

Adrian’s face grew paler with every word.

I turned away.

“It’s under control. Adrian Moretti, take your men and get out of my operational area. This isn’t your territory. No one here is moving aside just because you’re a Moretti.”

He didn’t leave right away after that.

Instead, he rented a tiny apartment nearby.

Every day, he found some excuse to try to see me.

Sometimes he drove miles out of his way to buy the cinnamon rolls I used to like.

Sometimes he brought hot coffee.

Sometimes he simply left something with the guard at the entrance and stood across the street waiting.

I never accepted a single thing.

He even approached my team leader and offered additional protection from Moretti Security.

The team leader gave him only one answer.

“She’s on my team. She doesn’t need some man to prove she belongs here.”

Later, before one of our field operations, Adrian blocked my vehicle.

“Natalie, the border’s too dangerous. You don’t have to forgive me. Just stop taking these risks. Let

me stay. Let me protect you.”

I rolled down the window.

“Protect me?”

I glanced at the Moretti Security men standing behind him.

“You’ve been out of the field for years. I’m an active Commission operative. What exactly are you going to protect me with? Your name?”

All the color drained from Adrian’s face.

I rolled the window back up and drove away.

I had more important things to deal with that day.

After Milo was captured, we followed the accounts he’d given us all the way back to Chicago.

In the end, every trail led to one name.

Selena Rossi.
