Memory Restored, Love Destroyed Chapter 07
Jade set the phone down and sat in the study all night. The words, combined with my recent behavior, led to an
obvious conclusion.
I didn’t love him anymore, so that was why I had become completely indifferent toward him. It wasn’t sulking, anger, or acting out.
From the very bottom of my heart, I simply didn’t care and couldn’t feel anything at all. It didn’t matter to me that he spent time with Maddie, and I didn’t even care if Maddie walked into his bathroom because I didn’t love him
anymore.
The realization hit Jude like a physical blow to the heart. Beads of sweat broke out on his forehead, and he pressed a hand over his chest, barely daring to draw a breath.
How was it possible? We had been together for years.
He had just grown a little impatient lately. He felt I embarrassed him, so he couldn’t help wanting to escape just for three months….
Three months… He’d left me in the hospital for three months, after I miscarried and lost my memory…
Jude belatedly began to tremble.
Still, he reassured himself that it was fine and that there was time to fix everything. I was just sick, so as long as I returned to the hospital for treatment, I would recover.
He kept telling himself that it wasn’t a big deal at all.
…
When I woke up and fumbled for my phone, it was burning hot.
For a second, I thought the battery might explode and panickedly tossed it away. Luckily, nothing happened after I waited for a while, so I picked it back up and checked replies to the post.
After I mentioned the miscarriage, most people were telling me to get a divorce. I had been thinking about it too.
Finances weren’t an issue. My best friend, Lydia Chase, and I had started a beauty clinic right after college. One of our videos went viral online before our brand blew up.
We opened more branches, and now, we were hands-off managers with the beauty clinics still making solid profits.
Oliver was my only worry. I wasn’t sure if he could accept the fact that his parents were getting a divorce.
When I left the room for breakfast, I noticed Jude hadn’t left yet. I had no idea what happened between him and Maddie last night, but he looked pale and exhausted.
“I’ll take you to the hospital for a checkup, Serena. There might still be issues with your memory recovery.”
He forced a strained smile, and his voice was unusually gentle.
I shot him a puzzled look. “What issues? My memory is perfectly fine, and I remember everything.”
“The amnesia is experimental, and very few people have undergone the procedure, so there might be issues.”
I nodded in understanding. “Right. I was your first human subject, so it’s only fair that I cooperate with your
research.”
pupils constricted sharply. “How do you know you were the first…”
“I overheard.”
When I had been bored and standing in the corner to get some air, I overheard the nurses talking.
“No one has ever run tests on the amnesia experiment, but Dr. Dixon had the guts to use it on his wife. That’s ruthless.”
“If one thing goes wrong, her brain is fried. Just the thought of it is terrifying.”
“He gave strict orders not to let Ms. Braun leave the hospital, to keep her confined, and not to tell her anything.”
“She’d just miscarried, has no one with her, and lost her memory. It’s heartbreaking to see her staring blankly out the window all day.”
Even the nurses, total strangers, felt pity for me. Meanwhile, Jude and Oliver were abroad on a vacation with Maddie, posing for smiling photos with her.
I said it calmly, but Jude’s eyes reddened at my words. “I’ll make sure you recover, Serena. I promise you’ll be you again.”
Had he finally realized my love for him hadn’t recovered? But honestly, I didn’t mind either. I just felt nothing toward Jude and Oliver, and I could still be easily moved by others or cry at a TV show.
If I did recover, my subconscious told me it would hurt terribly. I didn’t want that kind of pain.
“No need. I’m fine with this.”
“No way. You loved me so much, so you can’t just stop loving me.”
“But the experiment hurt a lot. It felt like my brain was being churned in a washing machine over and over. Every nerve was in pain, and I don’t want to go through that again.”
With every word I said, Jude’s face paled. By the end, he was as deathly pale as a sheet of paper and started swaying on his feet.
Seeing him like that, I let out a long, tired sigh. “If you don’t want things this way, let’s just get a divorce.”
