How Can I Kill Them with My Broken Arm? Chapter 04

The nurse slapped the medical chart down on the table and jabbed a finger at the timestamp.

“This patient came in at 9:26 pm with a fractured right arm. At 9:52 pm, she was in this treatment room having the fracture set. X-rays, surveillance footage, staff signatures, it’s all right here.

“So you tell me how she was supposed to be in an operating room killing someone at the same time.

The detective opened his mouth to respond, but the door burst open before he could get a word out

It was Cole. He grabbed my wrist and put on an expression of anguished concern.

“Vera, the patient is dead! Do you understand that? You need to cooperate with the investigation right now and come clean about what happened. If you do, they might go easier on you.”

On the surface, every word sounded like he was looking out for me. In reality, he was hammering each one like a nail into my coffin, branding me a killer with every sentence.

I scoffed. “The patient’s death has nothing to do with me. I never set foot in that operating room.”

Cole’s expression shifted and his grip on my wrist tightened.

“Vera, don’t say anything reckless in front of the police. All the evidence already points to you. If you just admit to it, the judge might reduce your sentence…”

He turned to the detective with a look of desperate sincerity. “Officer, she probably just made a terrible lapse in judgment. Let me talk her into turning herself in. If she confesses voluntarily, that counts for a reduced sentence, right?”

A reduced sentence? He would have been thrilled to see me executed on the spot.

I took a deep breath and was about to pull out the proof that would shut him up when Nina rushed in with the patient’s family right behind her.

“Vera, I know you wanted to take this surgery to prove yourself… but how could you… how could you gamble a mother and her baby’s lives just for a promotion…”

As if things were not messy enough already, she piled on another round of accusations.

“The truth is… the mother and child could have been saved, but Vera… she kept making mistakes one after another, and that’s what caused both of them to die…”

My blood boiled the instant I heard it. I looked her dead in the eye, measuring every word.

“Nina, you were the one who performed that surgery. You made the mistake that killed the patient, not me.”

Her face went white. The tears came even harder and she stumbled back half a step, shrinking behind Cole and whimpering.

“Vera… how can you try to pin this on me… You’re the one who did it…”

Cole immediately stepped in front of her, glaring at me. “Vera, how long are you going to keep this up?”

I was not making a scene. I was telling the truth.

I never got the chance to explain, because the patient’s family had already lost control. Without stopping to figure out who was responsible, the husband lunged straight at me.

“It was you! You’re the one who killed my wife!”

A middle-aged man with bloodshot eyes charged forward and kicked me directly in my freshly bandaged right arm.

The pain was blinding. The bone that had just been set fractured again on impact, and my vision went dark as cold sweat poured down my face in an instant.

I clenched my teeth and tried to force the words out.

“I didn’t… kill anyone. It wasn’t me!”

No one was listening.

The patient’s mother collapsed against the wall, sobbing so hard she could barely breathe.

“God, my daughter was only 26! Her baby never even got to see the world! Why does this murderer get to live when my girl is dead?”
