Never Meant to Be Together Chapter 07
When the pain in her back finally hit, Sandy finally understood what Wylie meant when she said, “Charles inherited some of my father’s cold-heartedness and selfishness. Sandy, you must never let your emotions blind you.”
She finally understood why Wylie had tried to stop her from rushing into marriage with the Lane family.
“Sandy, I can’t stop you from fighting for the love and happiness you want. I just want you to remember this: no matter what happens, I’ll always stand by your side, even if it’s against my own brother.”
Back then, Sandy had foolishly believed that Wylie looked down on her, despite claiming to be her best friend and accepting Sandy as her future sister-in-law.
She thought Wylie believed an orphan abandoned by her parents was not worthy of joining the Lane family.
That resentment became a seed in her heart. It grew larger and larger until it led to the irreversible disaster of today.
She collapsed onto the floor. The wound on her back caused unbearable pain, yet it was nothing compared to the emptiness tearing through her heart.
‘Wylie, I’m sorry.’
The living room fell into an eerie silence once again. Only then did Vivian finally remember Rowan.
“Honey, listen to me…”
However, when she turned around, the man who had been standing there moments ago was already gone.
Panic surged through her. She instinctively shoved Charles aside and rushed out to find him.
The moment she reached the door, a group of police officers blocked her path.
“Someone reported that you were involved in an illegal assault that caused the victim to suffer a miscarriage. These are the pieces of evidence provided by the victim.”
The photos showed the exact moment when all of them had pinned me down and hurt me.
The surveillance cameras inside the house had captured everything.
“Vivian Zimmer, Charles Lane, Sandy Lane, and Rowan Brook. You are all required to come with us to the station for investigation.”
The officer’s words left all three of them that remained stunned,
They never imagined that I would call the police.
The last bit of hope Sandy and Charles had been holding onto completely collapsed.
After everything that happened, I would never forgive them.
The three of them were quickly taken away by the police.
As for Rowan, I never expected him to find me so quickly.
Rowan pushed open the door to Room 201 in Paulownia Hills Hospital.
He looked at me lying on the hospital bed. His face was filled with guilt.
“Wylie, you’re really here.”
Only after seeing the video evidence did Rowan finally understand how absurd everything that had transpired was.
The child was not his.
The accusation that Wylie kidnapped the baby was completely ridiculous.
He and Vivian had been nothing but jokes the entire time.
“What are you doing here? Mr. Brook, if I remember correctly, we’re already broken up.
I lowered the newspaper and looked at him expressionlessly.
“I-I’m here to apologize.
“I’m sorry, Wylie. I know I misunderstood you, and I know I betrayed you.”
The pain in Rowan’s eyes was so deep it seemed impossible to hide.
At that moment, he regretted everything.
He regretted breaking his promise. He regretted hurting the person he once loved more than anyone.
Sandy had said that what he felt for Wylie was only gratitude, not love.
She was wrong.
It was not like that.
Rowan knelt on the floor. His mind suddenly returned to that late night, years ago.
He was trapped in a freezing hospital room.
He was waiting for his third heart surgery after being diagnosed with heart disease.
It might also have been his last. The fear kept him up all night.
By then, he had already lost most of his hope.
He pleaded with the night nurse to take him to the garden, wanting only to see a little more of the world before his life came to an end.
There, he greedily drank in every sight before him, cherishing each fleeting second he had left.
It was at that moment that he saw Wylie.
She was sitting in the garden, reading surgical materials.
The moonlight fell over her, outlining her gentle silhouette.
A breeze passed by, making the loose strands of hair on her forehead sway.
She raised her hand and tucked them behind her ear, her eyes never leaving the pages.
Sitting several feet away in his wheelchair, he found himself saying without thinking, “She’s beautiful.”
The nurse beside him heard and laughed.
“She’s the lead surgeon performing your operation this time. Her name is Wylie Lane. She’s just returned from a field hospital overseas. Her medical skills are exceptional.”
He stared at her blankly. At that moment, his heartbeat suddenly became frantic.
It was so fast that he could not tell whether it was his illness acting up or something else.
All he knew was that the man who had accepted death had suddenly found a reason to keep living.
Back then, he had sincerely thought that if he survived, he would give that woman the happiest future possible.
However, time changed everything. Vivian’s arrival eventually shattered all those plans.
He could not even tell when things had started to go wrong.
Perhaps it was the first time Vivian grabbed his hand and cried, “I can’t live without you!”
That was the first time he experienced what it felt like to be needed.
Perhaps it was when he found himself unable to end either relationship and chose the easiest path.
He thought he could handle everything.
He thought that as long as Wylie never found out, they could continue living as they always had.
As he looked at the blood-stained miscarriage report in his hands, he finally understood.
He had lost control of the past long ago.
It was his own hands that pushed away the girl who once smiled at him under the moonlight, the girl who had given everything on the operating table to save him, until there was no way for her to ever come back.
