Left the Pack, Fated Mate Regrets Chapter 06
I stood up, my footsteps clumsy and unsteady as I crossed the corridor, stopping right outside the Alpha’s council chamber.
The door was open. The Alpha had his back to me. Hearing my footsteps, he didn’t turn around.
“What are you doing here? Now that she’s gone, you finally realize what you had?”
I clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white. “I am going to the Northern Frostlands. I am going to bring her back.”
The Alpha turned around, his face etched with profound disappointment and fury.
“It’s too late. She has already bonded with the Alpha of the Snow Wolf pack.”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it struck me harder than any roar ever could.
“The Snow Wolf pack are fiercely possessive. If you go there, you might not even get to see her bones.”
I stood rooted to the spot, utterly speechless.
The Alpha walked over and placed a heavy hand on my shoulder, the force nearly pressing me to my knees.
“You failed her for ten years, Lucien. What do you have to offer to bring her back?”
“My life.” I raised my head to meet his gaze. “If she dies, I will die in the Frostlands beside her.”
The Alpha stared at me for a long time. Finally, he released my shoulder, turned away, and said in a hoarse voice,” Get out. And don’t die out there.”
Just as I turned to leave the pack’s territory, Selina chased after me.
She was barefoot, a cloak thrown haphazardly over her nightgown, her hair plastered messily to her face. She looked disheveled and pitiful.
“Lucien! You can’t go!”
She threw herself at me, wrapping her arms around my arm. Her grip was so tight her nails nearly dug into my flesh.
“Let go.”
“I won’t!” She looked up at me, tears falling like heavy raindrops. “If you go, you’ll never come back! The Snow Wolf pack kill without a second thought. You will die there!”
“Then I’ll die.”
“Why are you -” Her voice suddenly pitched up, sharp as shattered glass. “Why do you insist on throwing your life away for that woman?! What is so great about her? She’s nothing but a motherless bastard with a foul, stubborn temper. She doesn’t deserve you!”
I stopped dead in my tracks.
Selina stumbled forward from the sudden halt, but she still clung desperately to my sleeve.
“What did you just say?”
“I said she doesn’t deserve you!”
Selina’s voice grew louder and louder, as if she were desperately trying to pour out ten years of suppressed resentment all at once.
“We are truly in love! You said yourself that I’m your favorite. I’m prettier and gentler than her…”
“Enough.”
I shook off her hand with a harsh jerk. She lost her balance and collapsed onto the ground.
I didn’t bend down to help her up.
“Selina, tell me. Did you deliberately smash the keepsake of Sylvia’s mother?”
The color drained from Selina’s face, inch by inch.
“I… I don’t know what you’re talking about…”
I looked down at her. The moonlight bathed her face, making her look even paler.
“I know everything. The Elders told me. You bullied her behind my back and insulted her, all just to keep me protecting you.”
“Lucien…”
“Don’t call my name. Selina, I protected you for ten years. I protected you until I lost my own fated mate. From now on, I will never protect you again.”
The wailing behind me grew fainter and fainter, until it was completely swallowed by the howling wind.
The wind of the North hit me head-on, biting to the bone. But inside me, my wolf had finally found its true direction, sprinting forward with all its might.
Sylvia.
Wait for me.
This time, let me be the one to find you.
