Soren chased after Daisy, but halfway there it hit him that I was still standing where he’d left me. He stopped, instinct telling him to go back.
Ahead of him, Daisy was running straight toward the road with her face buried in her hands.
At the same time, he saw me walking away without looking back.
He figured I was truly furious this time, that I wouldn’t listen to any explanation right now. Better to let me cool down.
Daisy, though, might actually get hurt.
He ran faster, caught Daisy at the curb, and yanked her out of the path of an oncoming car. “Enough, Daisy. Stop
By the time they returned to the venue, almost everyone had left.
When Soren and Daisy returned, his parents were waiting, both furious. His father slammed a fist onto the table.
“Soren, you owe Vivian an explanation! She’s the Wellman heiress, and her father is not someone even I can afford to cross!”
Soren slumped in his chair, hands clawing at his hair, his eyes bloodshot.
The video I’d played on the big screen was still running, scene after scene laying bare his betrayal of our love.
His so-called loyalty had been nothing but a joke.
Soren took a sharp breath and dragged Daisy into the dressing room.
“Daisy.” Every trace of warmth had vanished from Soren’s voice. “You got the wedding. You got the pictures. Now give me the intel on the Sicilian crime family.”
Daisy looked at his expressionless face, and tears rolled down her cheeks, “Soren, did you really marry me just for Vivian? You don’t have any feelings for me at all?”
As Daisy inched closer, Soren instinctively stepped back.
“You put this ring on my finger yourself. We vowed before a priest that we’d never leave each other. Are you going to break that oath?”
Soren scowled. “It was all a sham!”
“But you said those words yourself!”
Soren stared at Daisy, wild-eyed and twisted with panic. He slowly shook his head as horror dawned on him. ” Daisy, you lied to me.”
The truth was impossible to miss. Daisy had engineered every bit of this, and he’d fallen for it.
“Yes. I lied.”
The air rushed out of Soren’s chest. His body went rigid and his mind went blank.
In a burst of fury, he seized Daisy by the throat and lifted her off the ground. “Tell me why you lied!”
Daisy’s face turned crimson as she choked, but a warped smile pulled at her lips. “You believed me, though, didn’t you? When you had to choose between Vivian and me, you chose me.” A ragged laugh scraped out of her throat.
The words landed, and Soren’s strength drained out of him. His hands fell open.
Perfume and hairspray hung heavy in the dressing room, but Soren could barely breathe.
After a long silence, he looked up, hollow-eyed. “You lied about Vivian being forced to marry into a Sicilian crime family? You lied about them holding her father too?”
Daisy crumpled to the floor, clutching her throat and gasping for air. “It was all a lie. But you believed it. Soren, Vivian doesn’t matter to you as much as you think. Even when I was lying, you still married me, didn’t you?”
Soren stood frozen as images of Vivian flashed through his mind, especially the shock and heartbreak on her face when he and Daisy announced their wedding.
He saw her in the bridal shop, sobbing as she told him she was carrying his child, and the devastation on her face when he denied everything.
He saw her mother collapse, driven to her death by the fury of his and Daisy’s betrayal.
When I’d needed him most, he’d listened to Daisy and chosen to stand by and watch.
He couldn’t bear to think any further. The pain was tearing him apart. “I’ll kill you!”
Soren let out a roar of despair, pulled out his gun, and pressed it against Daisy’s head.
Daisy only smiled, eerie and triumphant. “Even if you kill me, Vivian will never take you back.”
