He Signed Our Divorce Without Reading Chapter 10
“You don’t need to come to London.”
I held my employment contract up to the camera.
“It’s a five-year appointment. I can’t simply walk away. My long-term residency application has already been approved.”
“I’m not coming back.”
Grant stared at the contract for a long time.
The ring box slipped from his hand.
“You planned this all along?”
“Yes.”
“So this was never meant to scare me?”
“Never.”
I ended the call and stopped answering his messages.
One month later, the fund completed its acquisition of the old financial district.
I signed the final document on its behalf.
That same day, construction stopped at Harbor Point.
When the crew opened the old foundation, they discovered large amounts of industrial waste buried underground.
The city immediately sealed the site.
The bank invoked the loan terms and demanded early repayment.
Buyers who had already paid deposits filed a class-action lawsuit.
Every one of those risks had been listed in my original report.
Vanessa had deleted the warnings and forged an environmental clearance certificate.
When the truth came out, she transferred twelve million dollars out of the company and tried to flee the country.
The police arrested her at the airport.
The board removed Grant as CEO.
He sold the house and most of his shares just to cover part of the damages.
Whitmore Development had been preparing to go public.
It lost almost everything overnight.
When a former colleague told me what had happened, I gave one answer.
“I know.”
It had nothing to do with me anymore.
After the signing ceremony for the old financial district, reporters crowded the hotel lobby.
Robert publicly announced that I would lead all of the fund’s urban redevelopment projects across Europe.
When I left the ballroom, I saw Grant standing at the end of the hallway.
He had lost weight.
He wasn’t wearing a tailored suit.
Vanessa’s watch was gone from his wrist.
“I’m not here to ask you to save Whitmore Development,” he said.
“It doesn’t belong to me anymore.”
I stopped.
Grant took out a document.
“I withdrew my objection to the divorce agreement. This is the court’s final acknowledgment form.”
This time, his signature appeared on every page.
“I read all of it,” he said quietly. “Including the part where you waived the house, the shares, and every piece of marital property.”
“I finally understand. You weren’t trying to get more from me.”
“You simply didn’t want me anymore.”
His eyes turned red.
“Before Vanessa was arrested, she told me she had been using me.”
“She provoked you on purpose. She stole your projects and made me believe you were only jealous.”
“But I was the one who made it possible.”
“Every time you tried to explain, I shut you down. Every time she hurt you, I stood in front of her and protected her.”
I didn’t comfort him.
I had waited too long to hear those words.
Now that he was finally saying them, they brought me no satisfaction.
Grant handed me the document.
“The court can finalize the divorce now.”
“I won’t stand in your way again.”
I accepted it.
But he didn’t leave.
“Evelyn.”
“Once we’re no longer married, may I pursue you again?”
I looked at him.
The arrogant man Grant had once been was gone.
But I was no longer the woman who would abandon every plan because he made one promise.
The meeting room door opened behind me.
My assistant reminded me that the board was waiting.
At the same moment, a message from my attorney appeared on my phone.
Your divorce has been finalized. Congratulations, Evelyn. You’re free.
I put my phone away and walked toward the meeting room.
Behind me, Grant asked, “Will you let me see you again?”
I didn’t turn around.
“Starting tomorrow, you’re the same as everyone else.”.
“If you want to see me, make an appointment with my assistant.”
The meeting room doors closed behind me.
