Burning the Patents of Betrayal Chapter 05
Julie’s assistant carefully placed the voice recorder on her desk.
Taking a deep breath, Julie pressed play.
She hadn’t even heard the first sentence before her face went pale and she flung it aside.
The recording contained evidence of her illegal overseas transactions.
For years, the authorities had been quietly investigating Black Corporation.
Relying on her connections, she had always managed to avoid getting caught with solid evidence.
As her business grew bigger, so did her confidence. She had come to believe those old dealings were long buried in the dust of time.
She never imagined such damning evidence would end up in my hands.
Then, as if reassured by a sudden thought, Julie let out a breath.
“Adam must be furious. That’s why he’s using this to scare me. There’s no way he could actually bring himself to destroy me.”
A faint, almost indulgent smile even appeared on her face.
She turned to the assistant and ordered, “Go. Find him immediately. I went too far this time-I’ll apologize to him in person.”
The assistant hesitated, her expression troubled.
“Ms. Black… Mr. Ford’s location is no longer in the country.”
Julie froze.
“Then where did he go?”
“The last recorded location was the international airport. After that, the signal disappeared completely. The tracker may have been destroyed.”
Julie shot to her feet, her voice sharp.
“The tracker is in his watch! I gave him that watch as a token of our love-he swore he would never take it off. How could it be destroyed?!”
Her voice cut off abruptly.
Unless… he had taken it off and destroyed it himself.
Julie didn’t dare dwell on the thought. Forcing herself to stay calm, she ordered, “Search! Use every connection we have. Check all flights, ports, and border crossings. You have to find him!”
“I’ll get on it right away!”
The assistant hurried out.
The office door pushed open as Chuck rushed in, unable to hide the trace of glee on his face.
He wrapped an arm around Julie’s waist, pressing his face against her neck as he spoke in a light, teasing tone.
“Oh my, Adam is being so dramatic. Just because you wanted to spend more time with me, Julie, he throws a tantrum-causing all this mess and giving you so much trouble.”
His warm hand wandered restlessly along her waist, suggestively sliding toward the hem of her blouse.
“Let your people handle the search. You’ve had a long day. Come back to my place tonight-I’ll help you relax properly, hmm?”
Suddenly, Julie slapped his wandering hand away.
“Adam and I just had a small misunderstanding. Don’t talk about him like that!”
Chuck staggered back, staring at her in shock.
“If it weren’t for you stirring things up and saying such cruel things, how could he be this angry with me? Go home and think about your behavior. Don’t go out for the next few days-and don’t come looking for me.”
With that, she didn’t give Chuck another glance and walked straight out of the office.
Chuck stood frozen, watching her resolute figure disappear. A dark, twisted resentment slowly surfaced on his face.
After a long moment, he dialed a number, his voice cold and vicious.
“Find Adam before Julie does and get rid of him immediately.”
Standing in the shadows on a street corner, I watched as Chuck drove away with a grim expression.
While Julie and Chuck scattered their forces searching for me, I took the evidence-enough to deal her a devastating blow—and headed to a private club.
