The Last to Know Chapter 05
Chapter 5 The Truth Behind My Mother’s Death
When I woke up, a searing pain tore through my chest. It felt as though the slightest movement would tear the wound open again.
I forced myself to sit up, but Fiona, who had been keeping watch beside my bed, hurried over to support
me
“Gavin, if you need anything, just tell me. I’ll do it for you. Your wound hasn’t even started to heal yet. If you keep moving around, you’re only going to make it worse.”
She carefully adjusted the hospital bed until I was sitting comfortably. As she settled me in, she called the office.
“Gavin’s been hurt. I can’t leave him with just the nurses. I need to stay here myself.
“Liam, I won’t be coming into the office for the next few days. Please ask the other managers to keep things running.”
I did not care what Fiona was saying. There was only one thing I wanted to know. How was Mom? Had they managed to save her?
Ignoring the agonizing pain in my chest, I struggled to get out of bed. Just then, Mom’s attending physician, Owen Vance, pushed open the door. His expression was dark with anger.
“How many times did I tell you? Ms. Sutton’s condition was critical. She could have worsened at any moment. Someone needed to stay with her at all times.
“And you call yourselves family? You left her alone in her room. By the time we found her, she had already lost all vital signs. Her body had already gone stiff.”
Fiona froze, staring at the doctor in disbelief.
Everything had happened so fast. She had been so focused on saving me that she had completely forgotten about my mother.
She never imagined my mother would be gone just like that.
As my body trembled uncontrollably, Fiona wrapped me tightly in her arms and gently rubbed my back
“Gavin, don’t blame yourself. Ms. Sutton passed so suddenly. This wasn’t your fault. If you want to cry, then cry. I’m here.”
Even now, Fiona believed Mom’s death had been nothing more than a tragic accident caused by neglect
Rage surged through me. I shoved Fiona away with every ounce of strength I had.
The wound across my chest split open again. The wound across my chest pulled painfully, and the sudden agony nearly made everything go black.
I fixed my eyes on Fiona and let out a bitter, hollow laugh. “Fiona, do you know why I stabbed Oliver? It
was him. He stood in front of my mother and accused me of being the other man. He upset her so badly that she collapsed.
“Then, when she needed emergency treatment, he blocked my way and kept me from getting to her. She missed her best chance to be saved, and I watched her die right in front of me.
“He killed my mother. I wanted him dead.”
“No… that can’t be true. Oliver isn’t that kind of person.”
Fiona defended Oliver on instinct, but as she thought about it, doubt quietly crept into her mind.
Oliver had always seemed kind. But given who he was, he never should have been in my mother’s hospital room in the first place.
And my mother treasured me more than anything. When the knife pierced my chest, Fiona hadn’t heard her voice at all.
If my mother had still been conscious, there was no way she would have stood by without trying to stop
It was unless she had already died. If my mother had died while Oliver was there, then he truly had reason to be suspected.
Fiona frowned.
My injuries had been so serious that she had overlooked too many details. Now that she replayed everything in her mind, more and more things no longer added up.
