My Sister Reborn Took My Groom Chapter 08
Late February arrived in the blink of an eye.
I had just returned from a busy day out when I noticed a small moving truck parked outside the Cole
residence.
A crowd of neighbors had gathered around the entrance, murmuring among themselves with clear
expressions of envy.
Listening to their chatter, I realized the Cole family was packing up to move.
They were relocating to one of those brand new luxury mansions just across the street.
It made sense. Since Harrison had quit his job, he could no longer stay in the faculty housing provided by the university. His family had to move out.
I was just slightly surprised. Harrison hadn’t been in New York for very long. How did he already have the capital to purchase a brand-new house? They weren’t cheap these days.
But regardless of my curiosity, it was the Coles’ private business and had nothing to do with me.
I averted my eyes and turned to leave, but Harrison’s mother Scarlett Cole spotted me and called out loudly, “Shirley?”
My footsteps paused. I had no choice but to turn around and give a polite nod. “Hi, Mrs. Cole.”
Harrison’s mother rushed over and grabbed my hand with a beaming smile, a thick gold bracelet gleaming prominently on her wrist.
“Just getting back from work? Ah, you and Aiden are the truly dutiful kids, staying close to take care of your parents. Unlike Harrison-ever since he took off to New York with your sister, he barely calls. He just sends lump sums of cash back home and never shows his face!”
She framed it as a complaint, but her eyes danced with undeniable pride.
Looking at her radiant expression, a wave of mixed emotions hit me.
In my past life as her daughter-in-law, she had criticized and picked apart everything I did. Even after I helped Harrison build his empire, I never received a single warm look from her.
Yet now, without me trying to please her at all, she was all smiles simply because I had the Hettler family backing me.
It was pure irony.
I suppressed my thoughts and offered a polite smile. “You’re too modest, Mrs. Cole. Harrison is
making a name for himself out there. You should be thrilled.”
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, I made an excuse and slipped away.
The moment I stepped into the Hettler residence, I found Mrs. Hettler sitting on the sofa, furious.
“That absolute hypocrite Scarlett!”
I raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Clearly, she had just crossed paths with Mrs. Cole outside and was completely riled up.
The feud between the two women went back decades. They had been close friends in their youth,
but they fell out completely over some history involving Aiden’s father.
For years, the Hettlers’ wealth had grown while the Coles remained extremely tight on finances.
Mrs. Hettler had naturally felt a quiet sense of superiority.
But tables turn.
Harrison had suddenly struck gold, lifting his entire family out of poverty, buying a car, and
moving them into a new house.
Finally getting her moment of triumph, Mrs. Cole wasn’t about to let it slip. She had been dropping subtle jabs all morning, comparing their sons and driving Mrs. Hettler insane.
I offered a helpless smile, trying to think of a way to calm her down when Mr. Hettler stepped in to
save the day.
“Honey, why are you letting a New Money display get under your skin?”
“Look at Aiden now-he’s stable, driven, and working hard. And Shirley is incredibly smart and capable, running circles around everyone else! Our family is building wealth in silence. There’s no need to parade it around or waste your breath on petty arguments.”
“I just can’t stand her smug attitude.”
Though Mrs. Hettler wouldn’t admit defeat out loud, her expression softened considerably.
Mr. Hettler and I exchanged a quick, knowing look.
Watching Mrs. Hettler head out to the garden to water the plants with renewed energy, I smiled.
Mr. Hettler was right.
The Coles might have hit a streak of good luck and escaped poverty overnight, but the Hettlers
weren’t exactly standing still either.
in fact, we were completely out of their league now.
