My Sister Reborn Took My Groom Chapter 07
Hadn’t he cut ties with that crowd a long time ago?
“See? I told you, a leopard never changes its spots. A thug’s a thug, no matter how you dress him up. Oh well, Shirley, try not to take it too hard.”
Yvonne shook her head in sympathy, but her face was pure satisfaction.
In our past life, Aiden had died in a street fight, his parents had passed away from grief and illness, and the family business had gone bankrupt. Yvonne had suffered through all of it.
This time around, she’d counted on the same fate-except Aiden had actually straightened out.
That had been eating at her all along. Now she’d finally found her opening to rub it in my face.
Before Yvonne could say another word, Harrison suddenly stepped toward me.
Under Yvonne’s shocked and angry gaze, he spoke in a low voice, “Shirley, you… can come to New
York with us.”
His tone was dripping with charity.
What the hell?
My mind was a chaotic mess, and I couldn’t waste time on Yvonne’s petty remarks.
I shoved Harrison out of the way and ran out after Mrs. Dominguez.
Just as I reached the intersection, I spotted a figure racing toward me from a distance.
As he got closer, I gasped. It was Aiden-the very man who was supposed to be in trouble.
I froze in my tracks. “Aiden? You’re okay?”
Then what was all that talk about a massive brawl? Why was he here?
“Why wouldn’t I be okay?”
Seeing the confusion written all over my face, Aiden stepped closer to explain.
“I saw someone getting harassed down the street and stepped in to help. While I was handling it, I saw Mrs. Dominguez sneaking toward your dad’s place. She’s a notorious gossip, and I was worried she’d talk crazy, so I ran after her. Looks like I was right.”
Seeing me still dazed, Aiden let out a soft sigh and rubbed my hair. “You don’t like it when I fight.
Don’t worry, I won’t.”
Then his expression hardened as he glared at the guilty-looking Mrs. Dominguez. “Making up /. rumors about me street-fighting? You need to watch your mouth, Mrs. Dominguez. Wouldn’t want your words to come back and bite Dylan.”
Dylan was Mrs. Dominguez’s son. He worked for the local government.
Mrs. Dominguez wilted under his stare. “How was I supposed to know? You’ve been a punk since you were a kid, so I just assumed…”
She mumbled a weak excuse and scurried away.
The chaos finally subsided, and I drew a relieved breath. “As long as you’re okay.”
Aiden smiled, but before he could speak, his assistant stepped forward and whispered, “Mr. Hettler, the CEO of Avalon Group has arrived. He’s waiting for you.”
“We’ll talk tonight,” Aiden said, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze before heading off.
I stood there for a moment before turning back.
Yvonne and Harrison were standing by the side of the road, both looking incredibly sour.
Clearly, they had witnessed the whole scene and seen a perfectly safe Aiden.
I walked past them without expression.
As our paths crossed, Yvonne scoffed. “So he got lucky this time. He’s still a lazy trust-fund brat. You’re going to be stuck in this small town for the rest of your life.”
I smiled faintly. “Oh? And New York is so much better?”
Yvonne raised her eyebrows, a smug, knowing look on her face. “Shirley, do you even understand which way the wind is blowing? Do you have any idea what this country is going to look like in a few years? Let me tell you, the Hettler Group might look impressive now, but mark my words, it won’t
be long before the tide of progress washes it all away.”
“That’s enough, Yvonne.”
Harrison cut her off before she could say more.
He shot a cold glance in my direction. “Why waste your time explaining things to a narrow-minded local? Do you really think she can understand macroeconomics? Come on, let’s go.”
I watched their arrogant figures walk away, a slight curve touching my lips.
We would just have to see who exactly was going to get swallowed by the tides of progress.
