Tyler wanted to answer, to say yes, to say he loved her more than anything.
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Then Louisa smiled, tears spilling down her cheeks.
“I knew it,” she said.
Then she stepped back. One step. Another. Farther and farther away, her figure growing fainter with each step.
“Don’t leave me!” Tyler jolted awake, shooting up in bed.
He was drenched in cold sweat.
Outside the window, dawn had already broken.
He touched his forehead. The fever was gone.
“Louisa?” he called out, hesitant.
The room was silent. Empty.
He let out a bitter laugh.
Of course it was just a dream.
After he recovered, Tyler was like a different man.
He stopped going to the office and just handed everything over to his VP. He stayed at the estate every day, never going anywhere.
Sometimes he’d sit on the living room sofa all day long.
Sometimes he’d stand on the balcony, staring blankly at the garden below.
Sometimes he’d lock himself in the study, flipping through her old books and design sketches.
The staff all said Mr. Harrison had lost his mind.
Philippa came to see him a few times, and every time she tore into him, telling him he was wasting himself over a dead woman, which wasn’t worth it.
Tyler never said a word. Just listened.
When she finally ran out of steam and left, he went back to staring at nothing.
Worth it or not, he knew the truth.
Those seven years she’d haunted him, it looked like she was the one who couldn’t let go. But really,
he’d been living off her attachment.
He’d gotten used to her being there. Used to turning around and finding her right behind him.
He thought that was normal and she’d always be there.
It wasn’t until she truly vanished that he realized that his world had been empty all along.
One day, Tyler was in the study going through her sketches.
Near the bottom of the pile, a small notebook fell out.
Her diary.
Tyler picked it up, his fingers trembling slightly.
He’d never gone through her things before. Told himself it was her privacy, none of his business.
Now it felt like his last lifeline.
The diary started on their wedding day.
[June 18. Sunny.
I got married today to the man I’ve loved for years. He didn’t look too happy about it, but that’s okay. I’ll keep trying. One day, he’ll fall in love with me.]
[July 3. Rainy.
I made him his favorite honey-glazed salmon today. He said it was “good.” Only one word, but I’m so happy. Keep going, Louisa.]
[August 15. Sunny.
Today was a family dinner day, but he said he wouldn’t be home. I sat alone at a table full of food and had no appetite. It’s okay. He’s busy. Behave yourself, Mrs. Harrison. Don’t complain.]
[December 7. Snowy.
It snowed today. So beautiful. I wanted to build a snowman with him, but he was on a video call in
the home office.
I stood by the window all afternoon. By the time he was done, the snow had stopped. Such a shame.]

I lost the baby. I thought he’d be sad, even a little. He just said, “It’s fine, we’re young, there’ll be
more.”
