The Day My Slow Brain Finally Felt Heartbreak Chapter 05

“What fiancé? I’m her boyfriend!”

Nathan’s expression darkened instantly.

He glared at the nurse, his voice sharp with a hint of humiliated rage.

The nurse stopped in her tracks, looking him up and down.

Then, she let out a cold laugh.

“You’re her boyfriend? Then why the hell weren’t you here to sign the papers?”

“You call yourself her boyfriend, yet you stayed by another woman’s side during a life-or-death crisis.”

“Someone else had to sign her emergency consent form.”

“A guy like you actually has the nerve to call himself a boyfriend?”

Nathan felt as if he had been struck by lightning.

His brain completely seized up.

He lunged forward, grabbing the nurse’s arm, his voice trembling violently.

“What did you just say? She had surgery?”

“But she has a developmental delay! She doesn’t feel pain! It was just surface wounds, right?”

The nurse ripped her arm away from his grip, looking at him like he was a piece of trash.

“A developmental delay means she processes pain slowly. It doesn’t mean she’s immortal!”

“A ruptured spleen and massive internal bleeding! If she had arrived ten minutes later, she would have been a

corpse!”

“Do you have any idea how much blood she was vomiting when we wheeled her into the OR?”

Nathan stood frozen on the spot.

All the color drained from his face.

Valerie… almost died?

Because he refused to sign.

Because he hung up the phone.

Because he told her to lie in the hallway to reflect on what she did.

The nurse couldn’t stand the sight of him for another second. She dug something out of her pocket and

threw it straight at his chest.

“Oh, by the way, the young lady left this behind before going into surgery.”

“She told me to throw it away because it made her sick.”

“Since you claim to be her boyfriend, handle it yourself.”

Nathan scrambled to catch it.

He opened his palm.

It was a simple silver band, stained with dried, dark blood.

It was the promise ring he had given her when he confessed his feelings during freshman year.

Valerie had treated it like her most precious possession.

She wore it while showering, while sleeping. He had never seen her take it off.

But now, she didn’t want it anymore.

“Valerie…”

Nathan spun around, sprinting down the hallway.

He kicked open one ward door after another.

“Valerie! Valerie, where are you!”

Nothing.

She was nowhere to be found.

The nurse at the station told him that the moment the surgery ended, a man named Mr. Harrison had

transferred her to another hospital.

Where they went, no one knew.

Nathan charged out of the hospital like a headless chicken.

The heavy rain was still pouring down.

Suddenly, a thought struck him. He abandoned everything and ran frantically toward Valerie’s college dorm.
