Cole still refused to leave. 

With a heavy thud, he dropped to his knees in front 

of me. 

“Please… can we not get divorced?” 

“I’ll transfer all my assets into your name.” 

In a panic, he reached out and clutched at my hem like a drowning man clinging to a piece of 

driftwood. 

“I’ll put it in writing. If… if I ever betray you again, then I’ll walk away with nothing.” 

“I’ll have nothing at all. Would that be enough?” 

I said nothing. I only linked my arm more tightly through the man’s. 

Then I walked straight into the hotel on the corner. 

Cole waited downstairs all night. 

The next morning, sunlight fell across Cole’s 

bloodshot eyes. 

When he saw the unmistakably intimate marks on my body, the last shred of hope inside him finally 

died. 

“I actually kept fooling myself, thinking you were. 

only doing this to make me angry.” 

“You’re giving yourself too much credit, Cole,” I 

said, my voice calm and flat. “You’re not worth 

that much effort.” 

He looked at me for a long moment, his eyes filled with a shattered unwillingness to let go. 

In the end, he gave a pale smile. “Fine. I’ll sign the divorce agreement.” 

“Wait,” I called after him. 

A faint glimmer of light suddenly appeared in his 

eyes. 

But it went out completely when he heard what I 

said next. 

“No matter who you marry in the future,” I said, staring into his eyes and enunciating every word, 

“it cannot be Madison Wells.” 

“She indirectly killed my child.” 

“And you were her accomplice.” 

“I will never allow the two murderers who took my baby from me to live happily ever after together.” 

Cole’s smile was bleak and hollow. “Don’t worry. I 

won’t.” 

“I’ll make everyone who hurt you… pay the price.” 

Cole went to confront Madison. 

But outside her place, he ran into Julian 

Hawthorne, the illegitimate son his father had kept 

outside the family. 

Through the crack in the door came Madison’s 

tearful voice. 

“What do I do? Cole won’t even talk to me 

anymore…” 

“Does he not want to bring Milo back to the 

Hawthorne family now?” 

“Milo is your child. You have to take 

responsibility!” 

Those words hit him like a bolt from the blue. 

He had lost the love of his life and killed his own.

The divorce process was difficult and long, but it succeeded in the end.

Through Cole’s schemes, Julian ended up buried 

in debt and reduced to a sorry mess. 

Using “joint marital debt” as the legal grounds, Cole legally clawed back every asset under Madison’s name. 

Overnight, she was left penniless, and she cried 

and screamed that the baby she was carrying now had to be Cole’s. 

But soon after, because of her severe emotional 

turmoil, she miscarried. 

After everything ended, a vast emptiness and 

confusion swallowed Cole whole. 

Where was his punishment? 

A drunk driver’s car came speeding toward him. 

He suddenly remembered something from long 

ago. 

Evelyn had once tested him. 

“What if one day you stop loving me?” 

“Then let me…” 

She had covered the rest of his words with her 

soft hand.

spoken back then was, “get hit by a car and die.” 

Three years ago, that car had hit him. 

Because Evelyn chose to forgive him, he survived.
