After I Learned I Was Going to Be His Ex-Wife Chapter 14

Ethan didn’t avoid me this time.

He sat on the couch, staring at a document on the coffee table.

My heart tightened. Was that a divorce agreement?

But when I picked it up, it was a detailed business proposal.

My eyes went wide. It was for the company Zachary had registered.

Ethan looked calm, speaking in a businesslike tone. I felt like I was in a negotiation.

He said, “I don’t think we need to get divorced.”

I said, “Huh?”

He laid out his terms, one by one. “First, Mr. Thompson’s business is new. It’s unstable. But I can

help him, with connections and funding.”

“Second, I won’t ask questions about you and him. You don’t need to feel guilty about that.”

“Third…”

him off. I looked him in the eye. “You’ve said a lot. What do you want from me?”

Answered without thinking. “Nothing. I don’t want anything.”

laughed in disbelief. “Why?”

He was quiet for a long moment. Then he almost seemed to give in. “Because I want you to stay with

me.”

He looked up, the sadness in his eyes slowly gave way to pleading.

His voice broke. “Emily. I’m the one who can’t live without you.”

“Don’t leave me. Please.”

My eyes started to sting.

I sniffled. “You idiot. There’s nothing going on with me and Zachary. Stop posting nonsense

online.”

Zachary had made fun of me about the whole thing. Said my husband was way too generous for writing him a blank check.

What a reckless man.

Ethan stared at me in disbelief. His face turned red instantly.

He jumped up, looked away, too embarrassed to meet my eyes. “I’m sorry. I’ll delete the posts.”

I didn’t let him walk away. I threw myself into his arms.

“Ethan, do you love me? This time, I don’t care what anyone else says. I only want to hear it from

you.”

I felt his heart pound, faster and faster, louder against my ear.

He froze for a second. Then he held me tight, his grip almost desperate.

His throat moved. “I love you, Emily.”

My eyes filled with tears, but I smiled. “I love you too.”
