After I Learned I Was Going to Be His Ex-Wife Chapter 06

I was woken by my phone ringing.

I checked the time. It was already afternoon.

I answered. The voice on the other end was loud and excited. “Emily, I’m back in the country. Letts get dinner!”

I held the phone away from my ear.

Zachary Thompson. My childhood friend who’d been living abroad.

I hadn’t seen him in years.

I was surprised. “Why are you suddenly back?”

His tone was as carefree as ever. “Came to see you. Aren’t you happy?”

I was speechless.

This guy never took anything seriously.

By the time I got ready and arrived at the meeting spot, it was already dark.

I frowned and rubbed my neck. “Are you serious? You know mosquitoes love me, and you pick an outdoor barbecue joint?”

Zachary clasped his hands together in mock apology. “I’m sorry, I forgot. I’ll remember next time, I

swear,”

He eagerly handed me a skewer of beef. “I heard this place is amazing. Try it.”

Summer nights were hot and muggy.

I was covered in mosquito bites and didn’t have much appetite.

After two bites, I put my fork down. “It’s not even good,”

Zachary clicked his tongue and pointed to the parking lot below. “You have no taste. Even rich guys come here. Look, someone’s driving a Bugatti.”

I followed his finger. The car had already driven off. I only caught a dark shape passing by.

For some reason, I thought of Ethan. He drove a Bugatti.

Too bad I never got the chance to coax him into trying it in the car.

Seeing me zone out, Zachary snapped his fingers. “Why are you so out of it today? Is your husband cheating?”

I choked. “That’s ridiculous. We’re fine. Why did you really want to see me?”

I knew he never called just to chat. Sure enough, Zachary grinned and held out his hand. “Loan me some money to start a business.”

I was shocked. “What, did your family go bankrupt too?”

He rolled his eyes. “Don’t jinx me. I just want to prove I’m not some good-for-nothing rich kid.”

I was speechless.

We bickered a bit, but I still lent him the money.

Zachary was usually tight with money. But after my family’s bankruptcy, he gave me all the money he had to pay off my debts.

I never forgot that.
